So... 7 months ago I fitted a twin plate, 3 puck, paddle clutch. Supposed to be good for significantly more power than I'm running.

It's now started slipping :(

So I'll need something else. I don't do silly drop-the-clutch-at-5krpm-off-the-lights, but I do drive fairly hard. That said, I'm fairly mechanically sympathetic: heel toe, rev matching, double clutch. So, not sure why it's started to slip. It is a bitch to drive on the clutch. It's either on or off, and very juddery if you try to slip it, so the easiest in slow traffic is a higher gear and a few more revs to slip the clutch. It's possible that the daily commute, which involves the M25, has taken it's toll.

Anyhow. I need a new clutch. But what?

To be honest, the cost isn't the big problem - it's the PITA fitting it. I may just pay someone this time...

Id like to know if someone in auckland would change the clutch in mine when it starts to go.. I have friends at Exedy so the kit shouldnt be too bad.. just the labour!

i wouldnt go for a multi plate or puk style clutch on a car that see's alot of street stop/start traffic,
it is the slipping that wares them,

they just dont last for that type of use, my 5puk only lasted 25thou km.

i am going full face disc and uprated pressure plate this time,

ive gone with the Evo 7-9 Comp Clutch stage 2 kit. highly rated on the evolutionm forums.
also mating it with a evo 7-9 fidanza aluminum flywheel,

and a nickman evo spacer kit when he has them in stock again

Do you mean one of these? http://www.competitionclutch.co.uk/mitsubishi-lancer-evo-7-20l-stage-2-clutch--carbon-kevlar-2001--2002_p22491346.htm

What power / roque are you putting out, Gly?

If I've worked that out correctly, that clutch is going to be pretty cheap? Well $600-$700

yes but it can be had much cheaper from the US i bought mine from this trader on the EVOM forums
http://forums.evolutionm.net/members/171774-titan-performan.html

cost me $429.99usd shipped within the USA (picked it up while i was there) he does ship overseas aswell
and i got the fidanza from the same trader for $359.95usd shipped within USA

the kit number is 5152-2100 (theres a few on ebay.com)

im putting down enough to break 4 ayc rear diff's :) never had it dyno'd

That being said Carsten, we really need to do a dyno day!!

The last one we had was at Torque Performance in 2008(?), think we needed a minimum of 10 people IIRC which I think we might struggle to get given the inevitable last minute pull outs etc. Of course there are other dyno places but don't know what their specific requirements might be.

Cheers. Gly. Looks like the right option then, if it's working for you. A nights sleep and I'm a bit calmer now :) Will do Spa, drive round the slip at 4kRPM and then chew it down and change the clutch myself again. Someone wrote a really good, extensive guide on how to do it...... :D

was your twin plate a cerametallic one? cerametallic material cannot be slipped, slipping them roots them.
which is why people find they put 5 puck cerametallic clutches in, then try drive them nice like a organic and wonder why they wear out in 6-9 months.
I cannot rate my carbon high enough, slippable and grips harder then any cerametallic would. they just cost drug money. (my carbon tripple was 2300NZD at a half off sale!)

I run a competition clutch stage 2 with a lightened fly and I like it. It does have a small amount of judder if you try and pull away at low revs, but it is very easy to drive around.

Jason (foxdie) kileed an uprated clutch quickly - when we took it out he had destroyed several springs in the clutch plate. Bits of these were getting lodged under the fingers of the pressure plate, leading to slippage.

Carsten, the latest promise is monday next week for the next batch of spacers. There are quite a few waiting now, so I am hoping this promise won't be broken!

what kind of power can the oe clutches take? any expected point for it to slip when launching?

stock power barely, and don't you'll fry it within a couple of attempted launches, they don't handle

so i could potentially assume an uprated clutch? seem to be able to abuse the hell out of it, still feels the same as when i got it

stock clutch will take a whack more power then stock. but launching/clutch kicking/general abuse will kill it quick, but doing that will break diffs quick too.
