Hi guys, I've been registered here for a while but never really had much of a look around. I'm from NZ and there aren't that many people playing with these cars over here. Just a couple and i think they are on here already.

Below are some pics of my car. Working on getting it down the strip with some low 13sec times. Will keep you updated as to how i go.

I see you have a new extractor/down pipe system - Where did you get it from and how much was it if you don't mind my asking?

And Sub-13 seconds is possible... A couple of UK members have achieved this albeit with the helping fist of NOS...

Be interesting if your car does it without!! :-b

I spec'd a local exhaust shop with what i wanted for the downpipes and they made them up for me. 2.5inch mandrel bent tubing. Cost $500nzd. made quite an impressive difference to the way the car revs and builds boost.

The fastest i have gone down the strip is 14.1 but that was without the downpipes, intercooler or boost controller.

A new profec E-01 arrives sometime next week which will be controlling the boost, an e-manage in february. This should see me well into the 13's.

After that i will be good to go for the turbo upgrade... then we shall see some 12's.

What exaust shop was that?

I have been thinking about upgrading my exaust for a while... was going to de-cat it, but after taking it out and having a look, the stock system is not bent very well.

also, how long did it take to make up? I'm wondering If It would be cost effective to ask my Step-Father to make one for me.

If you have a good hoist and can get under the car its entirely feasbile to make it yourself. you just need to get your hands on the bends, flanges and a flexi. you can see by the picture what kinds of bends you will need to put. then it is just a case of bending and cutting them to shape.

the rest of my exhaust is just a straight 3inch down to the muffler at the back. the downpipes took a day, hence the cost as the labour in playing around getting the angles right was a bit tricky.

you also have to be carefull when making the downpipes that they sit in the right place or else they will knock on the bottom of the engine when the engine moves.

EDIT: sorry dude - didn't realise you were in auckland. yeah. pitstop new market would do it for you. they do a lot of performance systems and they are bloody good guys down there. give them a call. tell them you talked to Andrew about his front pipes.

Cheers dude

I'll have a chat with my Step-Father (an engineer) to see what he thinks and if he isn't keen, ill have a chat with pit-stop

yours is alright, coz i dont see much silver legnums around, but damn nearly everywhere i go theres a silver galant around, not a VR4 but still, seeing old fuddy duddies and their silver galant VRGs gets annoying sometimes....kinda like how theres hundy white legnums around too :-D

its probably common knowledge but i will explain anyway. auckland new zealand has one drag strip located in Meremere. and it is possibly the worst drag strip in terms of traction in the entire world. so, even though that Silver Holden GTO was pushing out well over 300kw (was modded) he didn't get any traction at all untill about halfway down the track. so yeah. they were quite easy to beat.

Reese, you get a new intercooler? sweet. Told you that sized cooler is an easy fit in our cars. you don't need to bend, cut or move anything really.

the next time i race i want to go for a decent trap speed. hopefully the EBC will help. my fastest time at meremere was 14.1@148km and that was on stock boost with only the exhaust done. So i am hoping for better times with the downpipes, intercooler, and EBC. the car definitely feels A LOT stronger now.

What size is that intercooler?

I have been looking at some 780mmx300mmx75mm, but they look kind of a bit too tall! :rolleyes5

Yeah. that is a 600x300 core. 800wide if you count the end tanks. If you want to leave the factory piping then you will find that this cooler size is almost perfect as with two samco bends, the end pipes match up with the factory piping almost perfectly. but if you are like me you would probably want to completely fill the mouth of the bumber with cooler rather than leaving holes on each side which looks a little funny. A good option would be to get a cooler custom made around 200-240 high and about 750 wide with the intakes welded onto the back of the end tanks rather than the sides. this way you will the mouth and the inlets match up with the piping.

the height of the cooler is okay. but a shorter one would be better. that way you can mount it under the impact beam rather than behind it like i had to do. this way you wouldn't be wasting cooling capacity by having 7cms of the cooler hidden behind solid steel.

Thanks for that! Looks like I will be buying myself a Birthday present later!!

I had a quick measure up and decided the 300mm high one would be tight, but for $200USD I cant grumble! I will probably cut it and weld it myself to make it fit a little better. :rolleyes5

find out how much a core would cost and see if your local radiator specialist will make up the end tanks to suit.

if you are interested i can take a picture of the car with the bumper off and you can see just how big it really is.

if i were to do it again i would probably get a 2.5inch thick one rather than 3 and i would make it longer and shorter... possibly even a gtr style one with swish back end tanks would be even better.

U can attack the impact bar on the front of the car. Easy to unbolt and cut. I didn't want to remove the bar due to safety reasons. My cooler is (core size) is 600x270x76mm. My end tanks taper out near the top of the core so it allows me to cut the min out of the front bar. The bottom of the end tanks flare out to 50mm plus the hose connector on that. If u start going to wide with the cooler u'll end up having to cut a bit out of the bumper to get the pipes to hook up right. As said before, inlet and outlet tanks from the back would sort this.

No same cooler i gave u all the specs off so u could use the design, know how to install it and what to watch out for. If u mount the cooler to low u'll end up ripping it up on something. My bumper scraps a lot coming out of drive ways due to the front over hangs these cars have. If i didn't have a bumper on the car i would be using the cooler as a plough :-D

i'm going to look at mounting my cooler on more of a downward angle, slopping back towards the tyres. Will probably chop an L or C shaped piece, the length of the cooler out of the top bar and weld it back in, flipped over to reinforce it again. at the moment it slopes backwards toward the top and yeah, the bottom of the cooler pushes the lower lip down to about 8-9cm's off the ground.

haven't caught it on anything yet but still... really wouldn't want to. Would probably push it through my radiator... those coolers are pretty solid.

i'll take pictures when i give it a go.
