Hi Guys,

So my second gear is pretty much shot, horrible crunch when changing into second.
I think i am going to have to replace it so do i need the ring assembly, sleeve and the actual gear, or just the gear?
Or maybe hold out for a cheap evo 4 gearbox?

Thanks

The gears are constant mesh (always engaged) so if you get crunching when changing gear, it is more likely because the sycros are shot.
If you plan on having the car for a long time, replacing them with new ones is the best bet. If not, you can get some out of a 2nd hand gearbox which does not have that trouble.

If you don't use your VR-4 for towing and want "better" suited 1st and 2nd ratios, you can get a Evo gearbox and change the gear set around. Make sure the donor gearbox has good syncros though.
It also pays to look up the gearbox code and make sure it has the 2.785 and 1.95, 1st and 2nd ratios.

I have a whole vr4 gearset sitting at home in bits that you could have for cheap if you decide to rebuild it.
means you wont have to take your car off the road if you go down the rebuild route.
