4 shift down to 3 gear

Does anyone has the following same experience ? And what's the problem if it is a problem ?

In certain speed say 100km when shift from 4 to 3 gear, it feels to me the gear engage reaction is slower then expected, for example it delays at least 3-4 sec the the same timing from 5 to 4.

The gearbox has a lockup mechanism in 4th and 5th gear. If you drive for any period in these gears you'll notice the revs drop slightly when the lockup mechanism is engaged. When you put your foot down and the gearbox tries to change gears, first it will disengage the lockup mechanism, so you should see the revs rise without the gear number changing, it will then actually change gear to 3 or 4 depending on which gear you started of in.

3 to 4 seconds does sound a little excessive, are you sure it doesn't feel like 3 to 4 seconds and is actually closer to 1 to 2 seconds?

There is a design fault in the lockup mechanism though which in extreme cases can cause a judder at low speeds. My car had this problem that was fixed by an aftermarket upgrade to the lockup mechanism and the gearbox oil was also changed to a different brand and quality. After this was fitted I felt the car changed gears much more quickly, but this is NOT a scientific assessment :) .

This happens when I'm using the +/- shift; from 5 to 4 it was engaged within my desire timing say almost inatantly, but from 4 to 3 it always has 3 to 4 sec delay.

It is quite danger as the vehicle running without gear engaged cause it very difficult to control particular I'm bending down the hill.

Mine is exactly the same. I reckon it's either a design fault, or a feature ;) I cope with it by just changing down a little earlier than I would normally from 4 to 3 to allow for the delay. Seems to be worse on warmer days, or if I've been using the gears a lot in fast driving.

I don't have as much delay as you guys have said nor a judder of any kind.
The only thing I can say is when the car is cold it takes alot longer for the car to change gear, revving to 3000+ before changing into second when pulling away very calmly.

I thought it may just one of those things inherent on these gearboxes.
I have only driven one other auto and that is a Merc, that just thumps into gear instantly.

My car is with g'box specialist for a leak from the seal. He's noticed that clutches are burning out. I'm going to get box rebuilt & would like number of company that did above modification please. While the box is out I may as well get it upgraded.

I just bought a 1997 Legnum vr4 (I think it's an S) I get the judder at low speed, scared the hell out of me. So I started looking around for information on the box and ended up here.

Never had anything like that happen to me before with an automatic. Is this really the case that you will get it?

Was actually thinking of taking it back to the dealer... 2nd day of ownership here d;)

Whats this aftermarket thing you can do to get rid of it? Or is there another option?

Yeah they have me booked in for a transmission service and flush. They want to start at the bottom and start there way up by the looks.

Yes I mentioned this to them but they don't believe me and want to try alot of other stuff first.

Which is starting to annoy me some what.

Did you get Mitsubishi to do the work or somewhere else?

How much and how long does it take do you remember? Ah well enough questions from me.

I got mine done by Mitsubishi Motors here in Huntly! I thnk off memory it took a week but we got a courtesy car, plus money wise all up it was about $465.00 but we just had to pay the $250 excess on our warranty.

I bet in the mornings it doesnt shudder until you have driven at less 40kms (thats when the trans is warmed up) and I bet it's slowly getting worse.

The mechanic (Haydon) said to me the very worse thing that can happen is the trans will stop working and you'll be going NO!! where.

Say I gave them your number if you do ring them, they'll look after you!

After reading this thread I did an experiment yesterday............in tip shifted from 4th to 3rd.......seemed pretty quick to me. Not as quick as thumping from 4th to 5th........but nowhere near a second let alone 3!

I do have other issues with it in auto mode though.......sometimes it doesn't know which gear to choose when kicking down, it will come down 2, realise there is no power at 6500rpm and go back up a gear, not a major problem I guess it just annoys me sometimes as I get a lot of revving and not much go! I suppose I have confused it with my mods a little bit :rolleyes5

You might have to do a run down here to Mitsi Motors then, and more than likely its the factory Alpine stereo. I havent used it yet as there is no remote control, and I don't know how to get it going without the remote :( any ideas anyone?

Ahh might have to places up here suck really. I can access the cd stacker via the communication centre... love that thing once you've worked out what does what.
