got a gearbox with input shaft failure,
filthy as inside and out...

whats the best/safest method of cleaning the gearsets?

degreaser & water ok?
or something like brake cleaner?

I would have said paraffin and a paint brush IMO at a guess?

Bring them around to my place, I have a wash basin. We will use Kerosene and compressed air.

Will need to check things out to make sure there is no damage to important parts, but it should be OK. I also have that other gear set which might be compatible, which looks OK.

if you need spares I have an entire w5m51 in bits in my garage. its a vr4 input shaft. and evo 4 output and final drive. along with all the gears and selectors. it was an evo 4 box with a damaged casing.

Did you blow your gearbox this time Carsten? I would think degreaser would be OK to clean up the gears.

nope,

picked up a manual STR box and 99% of the manual conversion bits,

needs a new input bearing/seal,

the clutch is ruined, from oil, but the flywheel looks good.

cant complain for $1 :D cost me 100x more in gas to go pick it up in Rotorua!

I usually use diesel. It's cheaper per volume than some of the other cleaners.

Yeah, but you also have the issue of the petrol station attendants thinking you're going to use it for burnouts and refusing to sell it to you.

Clean it with mineral water or brake cleaner. It doesnt really matter so much as the rebuild. that needs you to use auto assembly lube or soak it in ATF. With the input shaft make sure you use an air line down the middle and make sure all the oile galleries along the shaft are clear. Will faile soon if you do not.

Tony, I'm pretty sure Carsten will be talking about a manual gearbox. I'm sure his car is manual!
