Was just driving along & car stopped almost as if it had been popped into park. Was only doing a coiple of mph at the time but now won't move. Will drive forward about 2 feet & backwards about the same but that's it. Aweful noise coming from f/o/s but I'm stuck :( Any thoughts?

Something caught on the wheel? Allowing one revolution back and forth?

Don't know it's difficult to tell as too dark. Annoy though that the cover provided by @sky_insurance doesn't cover skids!

My car is now stranded as cant flat tow, too low for the only flat beds they have in Norwich & even using skids, my car is then too wide to get on their beds. Now got to pay someone to disconnect the drive shafts so they car recover it. Wtf is that all about /pan

just a thought but have you jacked it up and tried to manually rotate the wheels ? it could be just one hanging up .

Nope :( I don't have a jack in the car as the boot is stripped after respray & half the battery relocation being done. A mechanic is heading over in the morning to have a butchers but be good to know if its just a shaft or the entire box needs changing

I had a car do that to me once - like a giant hand had grabbed the engine and stopped it from turning - turned out to be the main bearing had siezed. If that's your problem then the fact you were hardly moving may help a lot. If it's gear box then it might be time for that manual conversion you've been avoiding all this time!

It may be that a bolt has come out of the caliper support and the caliper is now catching the wheel - I had this happen to me once and it's a god awful noise.

Something with gearbox/propshaft/differential? Just thinking ...

Kryton

Update, car now free wheels forwards but not back & lst all drive. All I can confirm at this stage is its not the rear diff & not driveshaft or cv so guessing gearbox or transfer box

i have a transfer box if you need it. the standard one wasnt my problem so i see no reason why it shouldnt be fine

Cheers peeps for your replies. In true style for not hanging about, the car is now up in the air with the diff off & transfer box / gearbox due to be removed shortly. Just drained the gearbox & this is what I found...

(mmmm, hairy /haz)

Looking at this, i'm guessing the gearbox is the culprit but could be the transfer box aswell (although I really would have to be seriously unlucky for both to have gone at the same time)

This will be inspected this afternoon so I can sus out exactly what I need

thats alot of erm metal there . not good

is the td04 tubs on yet ?and would this be a case of auto box not taking the gain?

Yep & shouldn't be as still running standard boost so be surprised if its kicking out anymore than some of them on here with TD03's running high boost

Manuel conversion time?

Kryton

Thats what i'm thinking. Hate manuals but at least I can then have some real fun with the tubs. You got one laying around by any chance :)

Well, if I look hard enough I will probably find VR4 manual kicking around garage floor

/haz If I would have bought Longbows conversion the other week all would have been well but I resisted & now kicking myself. If you have a conversion or the parts to do one, I could be tempted

If there's a magnet in the gear box, you should check that too (or was the Muppet the magnet).

Most, hardest to find parts, like shorter shaft, gbox mount, are available, problem is that I really REALLY not sure if I want to part with this lot.

Will swap with a Galant estate & some cash :) A car is more useful than some expensive paper weights /haz

Did you find out the problem as I've just had the same but I've just changed box and transfer box like 2 weeks ago
