Take off the inspection hatch that sits vertically at the bottom of the bellhousing. It sits between the torque converter and the downpipes. then turn the engine by hand and look at the heads of the four bolts holding the torque converter to the crack adapter prop shaped thingymajig. If they are loose they rattle against the aluminium gasket between the gearbox and the block. If they are loose, stick some threadlock on them before retightening.

No one has ever called me a hard arse before! :P More a flabby arse!!! :D

I wouldn't say it is common - I have only seen it twice. But what you describe sounds similar enough to what I heard that I figured it would be a sensible check.

Been having similar trouble to this but only on a cold startup. As soon as I engage the gearbox I get an almost tinny rattling sound. Goes away after a few hundred yards and doesn't happen for the rest of the day provided the engine hasn't cooled completely. Any chance it could be a similar issue or something more serious?
