Hi Everyone,

I'm a Hungarian guy living in New Zealand, riding a Japanese car. How international ;) I bought this very tidy 2000 Galant VR4 about a month ago, and I just love it. My childhood dream was a Porsche, and to be honest I just wanted a good car until I can save enough to get a Porsche (which is certainly not a week or two), but I've already fallen in love with this car so I think I'm going to keep it for a veeery long time. It worth much more to me then how much it costs anyway.

My Dad was a rally driver and then he serviced for another team for years. It was quite obvious that I'll love cars when I grow up, but unfortunately I never became such a big car guru as he is, I'd rather say I just love cars and have a little technical knowledge of them.

Thanks for all the info you guys gathered here, it's really helpful.

Cheers,
L.

That one nice tidy vr4 you have..

Is it NZ new Galant vr4?

I've seen this in person several times now (I work with Laszlo), and can definitely say its one of the tidiest VR4's I've seen. It's only really let down by the slush box attached to the engine.

Welcome to the club, very tidy looking car. I looked at a Legnum when i was in wellington a while back but the cost of petrol there put me off a bit. I ended up buying a non turbo sports edition instead and bought a Legnum VR4 here in Aussi where it cheaper to run ;) You have some great roads for driving on your way though makes me kinda jealous.

I thought the previous owner (I'm the second one) imported this from Japan when the car was 1 month old because at the time there was a kW limit for imports, so he couldn't get it right from the factory - or something like this. Anyway I'm happy if it's NZ new :) It is really tidy indeed the only thing I have to fix sooner or later is that it has a hybrid noise :) It's probably the transfer case that had been changed last year sometime. No biggie, but it sounds like some gears are too tight. I'm wondering if they haven't used the proper seal and the transfer case is closer to the transmission and gears are tighter therefore, but I'm not sure. Will have to raise the car and listen to the noise from underneath while it's running to make sure it's that...other than this single thing, it's almost immaculate.

pixelplay: Yeah, we have an awesome road pretty close to where I live, between Christchurch and Governor's Bay, a curvy serpentine road through the hills... ;)

The transfer box to gearbox mating is impossible to get too close. The seals are all o rings and the two boxes sit tight together. Getting under and listening is the best way to try and diagnose it.
Hope you sort it out and carry on enjoying it!

It is certainly a great looking specimen. Really like the colour too. It's just ruined by the steering wheel! :(

Thanks Nick!

Ryan: I'm planning to change it to a full leather steering wheel at some stage, this one isn't my taste and it's not even comfortable.
