Hey, auto box is playing up :(
I'm going to book it into a garage asap but am hoping somebody might have an idea of what the problem is.
Started up this morning and drove fine as it normally does, did a 5-6 mile trip out, all fine. 3 hours later i go to drive back, gears 1-3 sound rough as anything, almost like there's no oil, reverse is fine, as soon as it reaches 4th it's fine. Had an oil and filter change only a few months ago so no clue what's going on. Power is still there just sounds terrible. Had a look under the car and it does seem like there's a small amount of oil under the box, but no sign of it on the drive where i always park.
Anyone have any ideas?

Broken, unfortunately! :(
Gears 1, 2 and 3 are on the same gearset. This was exactly what happened to my original gearbox, even the description of how the noise started to appear!
Cheapest option is to put in a replacement autobox, if you can get one. As you have a prefacelift, you will be best with a PFL box. A specialist may be able to refurbish your existing box, but the price may be considerable.

Bugger, car's up for sale at the moment as I've just gone to nights and need something that does better mpg now i'm driving myself every day. That's going to suck :s
How long is it likely to last as it is?

No idea!
When we opened up my gearbox, there were a few chunks of metal knocking about. One or two noticeable bits were missing from gear splines and things I don't understand.
This was the interior view of my gearbox sump after draining:

I drove it for a few miles around Chesterfield, and then 90 miles down the motorway and it made it. Not sure how far it would have gone. Although I was tempted to launch it to see what happened! :o

I did. Wrote off the box, still keeping an eye out for a replacement but it's not looking good.
