Driving today and have lost drive in 3-4-5
When I shift back to 1-2 everything is ok and reverse is also ok
Gearbox oil appears clean and there is enough in there

Any ideas? Is it a stuffed box?
Had a quick search and cant find anything for the same 3 gears

i was under the impression that 1, 2, 3 gears were on one of the planetry gear sets and 4, 5 gears were on the other.
this was due to my last auto box going bang and having a grindind sound in 1, 2, 3.
4, 5 were silent, when i drained the box there was a big chunk of gear tooth on the drain plug magnet.
so no drive in 3, 4, 5, is a bit odd to me.

I agree with Dave. And I wonder if it is some sort of valve issue.

Can you pull the fault codes? That might give you an indication.

In the event another box is required, I've just agreed to sell my FL box, but I do know that Nick Mann has another FL box in his garage after his manual conversion. The only issue I can think of regarding compatibility is the age of the facelifts involved. Yours will be a gearbox with three plugs, whereas Nick's, like mine was, has four plugs, with it being an earlier facelift. The extra plug is a separate speed sensor. We don't really know what difference it makes, or if it can be easily blagged, or if indeed it will still be plug and play.

Sorry to sound pessimistic but I have seen this before and I had to change the box to solve the problem. I changed all the speed sensors and checked the fault codes and nothing else came to light. I didn't dismantle the box so I can't tell you what was wrong but swapping the box solved the issue

All the info is useful no matter if it is bad news.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281108908288?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 spotted this, can either of you tell from the pics if it has the speed sensor?

Just tried the flashy dash and no faults are stored

That looks like the right one for you. I'd ask them to confirm the chassis code and send the ECU from the same car too. Failing that, get the full gearbox number - W5A51 is the generic code, the gearbox was fitted to other engines as well as having different designs for the same engine.

Cheers Guys,

All the seller could confirm was that the box was a W5A51-3-EZB, which according to this (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?66816-VR4-Auto-Gearbox-Codes-and-AT-ECU-codes(and-date-of-change)) i think means it will be the same as mine?
So Ive bought it anyway!

Would anyone recommend replacing anything else while the box is out? the TC seal (http://www.camskill.co.uk/m22b0s1401p14857/Camskill_Products_-_Seal_-_Torque_Converter_to_Gearbox_-_Automatic_Gearbox_LEGNUM_and_GALANT_AUTO_BOXES) like this from canskill?

Will 10L of amsoil be enough - i have that in my garage but would hate for me to be 0.5l short when they try to start it,
And Finnaly - is there a how to guide i can give the garage as well, I found one by Richie but a lot of info was missing (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?12217-Auto-box-removal/page2&highlight=box) and i dont fancy it myself

Cheers
Marc

Don't buy the seal from camskill. The only one i have fitted from them failed within a few days. I have never had a genuine part from mitsubishi fail and I have fitted plenty of them.

Oh well, Ill call mitsy today and try and cancel the Camskill one

Speaking to nev earlier a couple of things came to mind that may have been indications.
My box always took a long (ie 300 miles) to re-learn after a battery reset.
occasionally when changing from 2-3 (with wot) the box would start to shift but the engine would continue to rev limiter then harshly bump int 3
there was a slight noise related to engine speed, very quiet, and not noticeable unless on a very smooth road, with windows open, and coasting - I "think" it was only audible in 3/4/5 but I could be mistaken
AFAIK my box has had Amsoil in for 5+ years

Marc - check with camskill if it is a genuine part. They did threaten to stop using the dodgy ones and only stock genuine stuff. If it is a genuine Mitsubishi part it will be fine.

Also, I have found Richys guide, now I have had a moment to use a real PC with a proper keyboard and mouse! Here it is:

FYI - The camskill one is a genuine Mitsubishi part, they must have got rid of the non-gen

Did you find out what was up with your box?

No, I bought a 2nd hand box which is getting fitted now, I might have the old box rebuild - depending on cost - but it wont be for a while so I wont have a proper diagnosis.

I went to an auto-gearbox specialist a few weeks ago to ask about a re-con for mine and they quoted £60 to test it and then a further £1200 for a full re-con!

That's about right for a full strip down and recondition to my knowledge.

Well I got the car back today (and a hefty Bill!),
It appeared to be a straight swap and everything feels like its should, D, & Tip both work - I havent given it a good drive yet (cos Im waiting for a mate to help me lift the old one out of the boot)

New ATF ,New TC Seal, fresh Transfer Box oil and I had the rear dif done at the same time!
Lets hope I can cover a few miles trouble free to let the bank balance recover :rolleyes3
