Hiya, Just thought I'd introduce myself as I have just signed up to join clubvr-4 as I am delighted to say I am picking up a pfl (I know the lingo already!) 96 trigger mauve Legnum this coming weekend, can't wait! I hope you are all prepared to answer my noobie type questions early next week ( I know! I know..>Search!!) I'd fancied one for years, the only other thing I had considered was an Impreza wagon but I like having something a bit more unusual so the Legnum won! Sky Insurance have managed to sort me out with a good price/coverage policy already so the Club membership has already paid for itself! :)

I also have a tuned bright yellow Fiat Coupe 20VT (Which won't be to everyones taste on here I'd imagine but is an extremely capable car). I am undecided which of the two will be my commuting (5 miles each way) car and which will be the weekend toy... though think it may be more of a summer/winter split. Looking forward to owning something with AWD for the first time. When I first got the Coupe I did have the intention of just keeping it standard but (And I imagine a lot of you can relate to this) one little mod after another lead to it now running ~320Bhp. So anyway I've said I will keep the Legnum standard but I am sure I will catch myself browsing through the Tuning sections in no time.

I'm already on the prowl for either Recaros/Leather seats or a retrim as to be honest I am not to keen on the japanese mid 90s velour seats...

Cheers

Will

Hi mate,

Am just outside Ayr. Got the car up in one piece yesterday from Birmingham, surprisingly on one tank of fuel though was running on fumes by the time I got here! A lot of fun driving, certainly getting used to the auto/tiptronic box was entertaining for the first few minutes in busy traffic. It's certainly a lot more refined than I am used to, soaking up bumps/cracked in the road. Although it doesn't have the outright straight line grunt of my Coupe it has useable power at any revs and the handling is in a different league. I have absolutely gutted the inside of the car today so it is super clean and smelling nice.

Identified a few wee niggles, most of which I can do myself no bother as pretty hands on:-

- Wee hole in the NS tweeter speaker inside the wing mirror
- Rear OS window doesn't go up and down
- Car needs under-sealed
- Paintwork is generally excellent, just few wee marks on rear bumper that have been touched up well but I will probably re-spray the entire bumper to get it back to new condition.
- Alloys have been resprayed - going to refurb them back to silver OEM look
- Original standard mats are in poor condition but I've managed to source a decent, more modern VR4 set off ebay.
- Cheap electric Boost Gauge installed on dash - Car seems to be running standard boost ~0.5Bar, managed to remove this and use sticky-stuff remover to clean up the spot where it was stuck.
- there is an aftermarket Blitz BOV and hard pipe meaning the standard funnel leading up to the airbox is missing. Will be looking to remove this and return to standard.
- Having an issue starting it sometimes. When I turn the key to the first position the dash lights are coming on as normal and the AYC, engine, Airbag check-lights are going out after a few secs as expected. Sometimes I then turn the key to start the engine (position 2) and nothing really happens, seems intermittent. The car is an Ebony&Ivory sourced one (2007) and has a Toad AI606 alarm/immobiliser fitted. It's either me doing something extremely stupid or something with immobiliser I think. There is also an HKS turbo timer wired up to the ignition stalk. I don't know much about these to know if it could be part of the issue. It will be getting removed asap anyway. I may need to put a Help thread up in the technical section shortly.
- I have a small bit of transmission fluid dripping from the middle or back of engine when the engine/gearbox is extremely hot. Only started after I had been driving for an hour or so, mixture of cruising/gunning it. I took it easy the rest of the way after discovering this. Didn't seem to do it today after some town driving. I've ordered some Amisoil to keep it topped up until I can sort it out. From searching the forum the most likely culprit is the torque converter seal. Is there anyone in Scotland with the technical no how that could change this, whether it a forum member or garage? I've had a look at the How-to guide and could probably do it myself but struggling for time to commit to doing this myself...

Hello and welcome to the club Will :)

It maybe of no relevance but on very rare occasions my vr4 decides not to crank untill I ease the lever (being in the P position) forward a touch and it fires up every time, I assume there's a crank inhibit switch of some description that's mis aligned or worn??

Cheers mate - I did wonder about this as I have the opposite where I am having to pull the lever back into N or D. Can someone confirm if I need to be pressing the brake to start? (I told you there'd be silly questions!lol)

Anyway first alloy sanded back ready to be primed and painted. Gave up for the night as was getting eaten alive by Midgies! Also used wirebrush drill attachment to clean up under the arch and round the rear suspension. In remarkably good condition for a 17 year old car... :)

No need to press any pedals to start the car. The inhibitor switch is near the front of the gearbox, under where the funnel should be. The car should start in P or N, it should not start in R or D.
Sounds like you are on top of it all tbh.

Thanks Nick, now I know where to look to adjust mine. It's been a bit temperamental since engine swap :)

Had an initial look at the starting issue, seems quite a lot of people have had similar problems on the forum. Took the connector off the top of the gearbox, gave it a good clean up and checked all the white connector pins were in tact. The Inhibitor switch is moving into position no bother though still suspect this is the culprit. The car seems to start easier in N rather than P, but not every time. Is teh inhibitor switch an easy swap for a new one?

Mine has not long started doing this. I also have an Ai606 alarm, fitted in February 2008. And the anti-hijack feature (autolocking) doesn't always automatically unlock the moment you turn the engine off (as it should do). I suspect that this will require a visit from a Toad specialist.

First wee mod done, VDO mechanical boost gauge installed with an inline restrictor to keep the needle smooth. Car has a manual boost controller installed which seems to be boosting to 0.85Bar is 4th/5th when engine is under load. I have an Electronic Controller to go install but unfortunately I am a bit short of boost hosing to get it done today.

Currently on the hunt for the Toad alarm brain (Which I believe is behind the dash somewhere) so I can get the Serial number to get Toad to provide me with the Pin number so I can turn off the annoying anti-hijack door locking.

Had a change of heart and decided to mount the Gauges in the spare DIN slot in the dash, very tight fit but they went in, needs a bit of tidying up but overall happy with it. Awaiting on wideband AFR and oil press/temp gauge arriving to fill the two outside holes along with boost gauge (Ambient temp gauge just in there to fill the hole temporarily) ...

Thats the gearbox sorted! Woo! :) Pretty much every seal and gasket replaced, new fluid, new filter, steam cleaned. So much smoother now, very happy. Has also sorted my occasional non-start issues.

Also managed to do loads of other wee jobs like repair various bit so of interior trim, got rear O/S window working again.

I've given the seals a good clean a coated with wd40 that will hopefully help.

Thin kam going to go with black with dark purple sticking to detail...

Took the plunge and ordered one of these (From an Evo X) to fit. Should be a good mod for not a lot of outlay...
