Yeah Id be keen if its closer to home (once my cars in one piece again)
but I do occasionaly go up north to see family but usually fly as its easily 1/4 the price of driving

Welcome! Car looks great!

Myke
20-08-2013, 08:55 PM
Thanks guys, yeah its a nice looking one for sure. For those who asked i am in Auckland(north shore). I do have a quick question, just wondering is it normal for them to heat up to optimal in a short period, like 1.5km. it doesnt overheat or anything sits at optimal nicely but when i brought it the overflow was bone dry and radiator needed a tiny topup. Hoping there isnt an air pocket or something in the rad.

Tanga
20-08-2013, 09:04 PM
Sweet im on the shore aswell! Meet up time!!

Re your problem. Mine heats up within a k. Sometimes my radiator is a little low but never over heated...

Myke
20-08-2013, 09:09 PM
good to know it sounds normal :D. hmmm yeah meet up sounds like a good plan haha but if your radiator cap goes missing dont look at me :P

Ahhhhhahahahahahaha

Keep an eye on this guy.

Have a look at the cruise for October and get you name down if you keen man.

I tried to do a random last minute mini meet last week. Its went well with me myself and eye.
Next time we might have you and kitt? Haha

Myke
20-08-2013, 09:28 PM
Hahahah. sounds like it went well :P, I might look at the October cruise but i will see how the car goes first. If i have no problems with it then i don't see why a Sunday cruise would seem like a bad idea. (except maybe the withdrawal of my life savings for gas :P)

Tanga
21-08-2013, 01:19 AM
Man dont even get me started on gas, I use 98 on Mobil Wairau next to mc dz, 350km or less from a tank... My old Corona did 700 to a tank! haha

Are those black leather seats I can see in the photo - also, does it really have Bilstein shocks?

yeah black leather(maybe vinyl, not sure), as for springs not to sure if there bilstein but there is a cert plate for springs. i shall have an investigation when i get home. You know this car or one of its 8 previous owners? lol

I have never got more then 400kms on tank of gas and that is a long trip aswell... Every week I'm doing around 250kms to 3/4 of tank of Z 95... And I have used 3/4 of tank to 120kms before :D

Tanga
21-08-2013, 07:57 AM
Lol! Yea sean I drive like I CAN afford gas. My wallet says otherwise but ignore that prick hahaha

Adam.Findlay
21-08-2013, 08:07 AM
good lord. I only get sub 400km/tank if im giving it death everywhere. usually average 400-450

you guys should look at getting a hard wired LC-1 wideband with simulated narrowband 02 output wired into the ecu to keep check on your AFR's as your stock 02 sensors are probably nothing better than exhaust bungs considering the age of the cars. or get a re-map. they run rich stock so leaning them out = more power and better km/L

Tanga
21-08-2013, 08:47 AM
Id say I am running rich because if I get the bov goin lots when u pull up I can smell fuel?

Bender
21-08-2013, 09:23 AM
I know mine is runing rich, Seem to run richer when I use BP 98. I do plan to get mine re-map at some point.

Tanga
21-08-2013, 09:33 AM
Anyone got the cost on re map?

Gly
21-08-2013, 09:40 AM
depends who on heres willing and if your willing to travel.

also you need a 7202 or 7203 chipped ecu,
unlikely in your 97prefacelift,

i do have one i sell you for $170 inc courier

wintertidenz
21-08-2013, 09:45 AM
On round town I can get about 400km out of a tank. On the open road, about 600km.

My last trip to Taupo was 25 litres to 280km, giving it some hell along the way to surprise the friend in the back who had never been in a turbo car before LOL.

Check plugs, air filter, and definitely the O2 sensor. I had problems with a wideband when it was in my car, I suspect due to the turbo timer.

Oh - and Mobil 98 seems to be far worse for economy than BP. Ryan did tests some time back and found that the Mobil fuel caused the octane level to be pulled more than BP too.

Adam.Findlay

my last trip to the race track i got 150 km to a full tank

I need to do this. Badly. Only getting 250-300km out of a tank of 95octane. Makes me sad :(

SEAN-NZ
21-08-2013, 10:49 AM
maybe you should give 98 a go if its available, i only ever use 98 unless for some reason i have to use 95, very rare though

With the open road driving I do now, 600km easy. Reckon 700km is easily possible if I spent a little more time on the tune and getting the injectors setup just right (and had no city driving)

Most of it is how you drive it, the other is the state of a few things, off the top of my head the following are easy things to check/correct but make quite a difference.

1) O2 sensor
2) Air filter setup (POD filter will usually give you drastic fuel usage increase)
3) Vacuum / Boost leaks (makes a BIG difference on boost)
4) Plugs

The oil takes a little longer to warm up than the coolant, so that's just something to be wary of when warming it up. Also, the expansion tanks are often on the low, although for a few dollars, I would put a new radiator cap on just to be sure it is working correctly.

hahah yeah cant say my radiator cap could even be classed as a radiator cap. Its more of a cover. The center spring loaded bit that im used to with other cars doesn't seem to be there at all. Will probably replace that.

Next on the list one of the belts seems to squeak. anyone got any ideas what belt and any remedies. It seems to squeak when i start accelerating from standstill/crawl and lasts around 10secs or so but its not all the time.

I dunno. i guess i know more then your avg person (i know how most the stuff under the hood actually works) but when it come to diagnosing something count me out. like i said so far its only happened while i have been driving. I haven't had a chance to hear it while its stationary where i can have the hood up to find out. was hoping someone else might know judging from the characteristics but at a ruff guess im going with power steering belt as i find it tends to be when i have slowed down at a give way or traffic light and then start to turn. are they easy to replace on a legnum?

1) O2 sensor
I need to check mine

2) Air filter setup (POD filter will usually give you drastic fuel usage increase)
I'm gettng a K&N panel filter

3) Vacuum / Boost leaks (makes a BIG difference on boost)
I think i do have a boost leak. When I hit 12psi, it sometimes will go down to 10psi or under on full boost

4) Plugs
They need doing haha

Usually you won't notice small vacuum leaks. Until they get big enough and might act up on driving/idling/etc. I would certainly test it! Either with a self made or bought bung that hook up to an air compressor. Or with the engine running and spraying carb cleaner around all air hoses and connections (when the revs rise, there's an airleak). Be careful though if you engine is really hot this stuff is flammable!

Hows the ride going Myke?

Myke
04-09-2013, 04:54 AM
The ride is great, however the mileage ... not so much. 300km to the tank driving like a nana. i think i have a serious over fueling issue stinks of rich mixture and the end of the exhaust is just black with unburnt fuel. cleaned the filter and o2 sensor and no change. this weekend i will do oil and filter and check leads and maybe plugs oh and i guess look for any piping leaks. I dont have any fault code scanner to run to see if there is any issues and engine light doesnt stay on so cant imagine anything major. chucked a boost gauge in because i was curios what stock boost was (turns out to be around 5-7psi, tiptronic). oh and gearbox needs new oil(i hope) it tends to hesitate a bit on shifts but apart from all that im still enjoying it hahaha.

Tanga

Haha sounds like fun bro! Hit me up if you need an extra set of hands, im in glenfield and happy to help out. Mine had a bad shudder in the trans when I got it, did a flush and she all good now. Its suprising how mich the fluids can make a difference

wintertidenz
04-09-2013, 07:31 AM
If you need a hand I'm out in Mt Wellington and I have a cable along with Evoscan so you can read codes.

Start off with resetting the ECUs (battery disconnected for 5-10 minutes) and do your filters and fluids, then see how it goes. The car will take a few hundred km to settle in after a reset, so take it gently and it will learn how you drive.

Tanga
04-09-2013, 07:43 AM
So disconnect batt for 5-10 min to reset the ecu?

Myke
04-09-2013, 09:12 PM
i dunno but i left it off overnight. Will let you know if there is any improvements

Subaru ETA
05-09-2013, 07:14 AM
So disconnect batt for 5-10 min to reset the ecu?

Yes. All you are doing is powering down the ECU so it looses what it has learnt like fuel trims and shift patterns

I just put the stock air box back on, see how my fuel efficiency goes now

so instead of starting a new thread i will ask here,

The transmission oil flush is $383.00 inc GST for your Legnum.
The flush treatment assists with removing the old transmission fluid,
MMSP-III is the transmission fluid that will be used.

is this a normal price for trans flush/fair price.
is it hard to source the oil and do it myself?

Myke

wintertidenz
13-09-2013, 09:00 AM
That's not a bad price considering the fluid alone is about $250 of the cost.

IIRC they hook up the transmission to a flushing machine via the trans cooler pipes which ensures all the crap fluid is removed.
