Ok. Useless question time, but I'm curious.

What is the fuel reserve like in the 1997 Legnum VR4 when the little round orange fuel light comes on at the base of the fuel guage? INSERT INTO post VALUES (I tend to normally have a bit of a haul to get to a petrol station).

I've only just picked the car up a week ago and haven't been game yet to see how far I can get once it comes on. It also looks a little like there is a second warning light that comes on when the situation gets really desperate, but with no manual for the car I can't tell.

Any input?

Thanks ....

Not risked it either mate so cannot help you there but I don't like to run low anyway in case it drags **** up from the fuel tank into the system

The EVO guys say they have quite a bit of fuel left once the light comes on, enough for a few miles at least I'm sure but make sure you are heading for fuel, as these cars don't like to run out of fuel.
Best to just keep it topped up a bit and not rely on the fuel gauge.
I only use Optimax, but luckily there is one about a mile away, but it's usually in the complete opposite direction to where I want to go but I won't use anything less.

Thanks for the input.

My first destination after leaving work tonight is the petrol station anyway. Fortunately I work on the top of a hill and there is a pump at the bottom ;)

I have run 30 miles with the light on to find an Optimax station  and it took 56 litres to fill so I guess there was still around 1½ gallons left. Working back, I guess there's around 3 gallons left when the light comes on INSERT INTO post VALUES (in my car).

I ran out once - I used similar logic to H7 as when I filled up it was usually about 25 miles after the light came on. I could never get more than 56 litres in the tank so figured there must be quite a bit left in. One day I risked it and ran out after about 35 miles easy driving, still only got 58 litres in when I filled it.

i read someware INSERT INTO post VALUES ( cant remember were) that there are 12 lit. in the tank when the warning light goes on.
But i never test it :nono:

I have always been told It is about 9-10L once the light comes on i have only been able to 52L in the tank even after diving a few miles.

But if you can avoid it don't let get any where close. if i am not mistaken you a more likely to drag up some rubbish from the bottom of the tank if you let it run dry.

Wow! A thread from the archives!! Yes - to confirm, the VR4 has a 60l tank, if you fill up when the light comes on you should get around 50l in. But beware that your pump will never be able to pump all 60l out! From PJ's experience above, it looks like 58l is the most you will ever likely be able to use.

my handbook says 1.8 gallons...

but then the orange light glows on & off a lot before if finally comes on strong, full time.

I don't remember ever gettign more than 50 litres in

I had a fairly quick run on my private estate roads ;) on Sunday with the orange light on and the car was starting to fluff at around 100, so I guess the pump was drawing some air. Drove another 15 miles and put in 54 litres.

61 litres is the most i have ever squeezed in the tank, and i mean squeeze, so it was level with the top :speechles

I normally run until light comes on and stays on, and then will go a max of 20 miles.. But i have run to 30 once when i forgot to take my cash card to work with me and had to run home on fumes /pan

And before you say ! "IT's NOT POSSIBLE TO GET 61 litres in a 60 litre tank"

I had a car that specced the fuel tank at 17.6 gallons !! I could squeeze 20 gallons (90 litres) into it.. :inquisiti

Most tanks have approx 9-10 litres once fuel light comes on /yes

I find that in the white VR-4, the quarter full line on the fuel gauge is accurate, if I fill up when it is at that point I get 33-34 litres in. This is normally after I've travelled 280-310km on the tank. I drive it for another 100km, then fill up, by that point it has used about 44-46 litres, and thats about as low as I want to go on a regular basis. I don't see much point in running it completely dry all the time.

On my purple VR-4 when I get 640km out of a tank, it had used about 53-54 litres, and the fuel light had been on for about 90km!

how the hell do you gat 640km (360miles) out of not even a full tank i am lucky to get 240 miles (420km) on a run out of a full tank. My car is a standard VR 4 and an auto. It can't make that much difference can it.

Any thoughts.

my roadtrip down the south island at xmas time with a fairly heavy loaded car was getting about 550km from full to the fuel light
so if the fuel light takes us another 80-100km then bradc's claim seems about on par with my experiences with the vr4 on the open road.

though there is no way i would see that kind of milage with round town stop starting involved though.

That was on mostly open roads, never going above 2500rpm with my purple car. On my white car I'm lucky to get above 450km if I drive similarly. Either the prefacelift tune isn't as good, or there is something not quite right with my white car.

My car ran out of petrol the other day no thanks to the ultra crap fuel reading:oops: My orange light doesn't even come on anymore and my fuel consumption has dropped considerbly. My glove box light no longer works either /Hmmm Can this be linked to my low petrol light not working :inquisiti

usually on road trips (open roads) i dont let it go under a quarter, cos you never know when the next station is... almost had that expereince when the gorge was closed, had to detour through palmerston north, usuall i fill up in danniverke from wellington on full (depends if i keep it under 110km)

Not one to muck about with testing how low a fuel guage would go on my new Galant, especially after reading these posts in the past, but as I was driving locally I thought I would give it a go and see what happens.

My old 6G Galant had a coloured area on the indicator to show you you're entering low fuel territory before the warning light would come on, the 8Gs don't have such an area... Anyway,

My heart sank when the needle on my 8G came close to 'E'... no light.

I was worried when the needle hit 'E' bang on... still no light.

My eyes were pinging between the road and the fuel guage when the needle PASSED the 'E' mark and still no light yet the car was driving perfectly.

Then, after about 9 miles in this position, the low fuel amber light started to glow ever-so slightly... Good sign! Then went out.

I managed to get around 5 more miles out of the car before the amber light came on and stayed on - so filled up! 56 litres to the brim.

Not something I would usually do, and not a fan of using up all the sludge in the tank - but as I was driving locally I wanted to give it a go to see what the tolerances are on an Elegance V6-24v so I know in the future how much fule I have to play with.

Got 321 miles out of a full tank - but that did include a lot of motorway miles.

Thought I was cutting it fine the other day. The guage was just touching the bottom of the guage and the light had flickered a couple of times and I rolled into the Shell after 3 miles of hunting down a petrol station(they are rare on the autobahns). I managed to get 48.8 litres in and that was literally to the edgeof the filler!

I did about 50 miles once :)

321 miles out of 56 litres isn't bad, I reckon I will beat that with the current tank of fuel in my ST-R though :)

i am thinkin i have the worsed fuel consumption in the world i only get about 200-210 mile. on full tank about 40-45 quid would that be right to full it?

anyway the last time i was up at aviemore and i had to fill up on way back to glasgow and not driving too fast as had brats in car lol

i have a manual boost controller and a fubitu or something cat back exhaust do u think that would do it ....

bradc
30-12-2007, 09:30 PM
40-45 quid would be about 35-40 litres correct? If so then that isn't terrible mileage, lots of other people on here get similar range out of their tank.

According to the manual the light should start up when there is 9 liters left

From full tank to yellow light in my cars:

VR-4 = 300km
V6 = 500km
2.4 GDI = 550km
Diesel = 650km

I've had 100km from when the fuel light started coming on. That was mostly highway driving with about 15km in town (small town!!). Took 57 litres to fill. The most i've had on a tank was 550km.

Ryan

Think the most I've done on a tank so far is 550km and that's open road driving at about 120km/h with occasional forays into loss of licence territory.

Beastlee
09-01-2008, 07:52 AM
550km = 343.75 miles.........how?!? So far I've done 60 miles to the top quarter of the tank with a mix of driving.

Turbo_Steve

A lot of it seems to be down to driving style. Ours seems better driven more agressively. If you try and 'pootle' it's always coming on/off boost, which seems to make it thirsty.
