Have been using 15/40w in mine since I first bought over a year ago but seem to be burning it every 3-5000kms, Change the oil about 2500kms ago and it showing about half on the oil stick now. My VR4 has done around 198,000kms.

What is the best to use? And what is every one else using?

ive used amsoil 0-30, but use castrol edge 5-30 because its cheaper and easier to get, never had any issues with using oil

I'm not worred about the price of oil, Would like to go full 5000kms without topping it up or changing it, Change the oil at least 5 times in 16,000kms since I have own the bloody thing..

Know is little leak around the rocker covers but is no big leaks, So it must be burning it, Is no blue smoke coming out of the exhaust, Only think I can think of is that I'm using the wrong oil.

Used the same oil in my Stagea and had the same problem.

I'm using the full synth 5w40 Penrite stuff with no issues. My mate who works at Super Cheap Auto swears by it, and it's pretty good (although my lifters are a bit noisier with the Penrite on initial startup).

It's done 6000km in my car and it's only a slightly darker brown now which the Castrol 5w30 never managed to do (it was BLACK by 4500km).

The oil I have in mine at the moment goes black within 1500/2000kms.

Have been using Royal 15w40

Mitsi specify fully synthetic 5w-30 or 10w-30. If it was available when the VR-4 was created, they probably would have specified 0w-30 too.

Even if healthy, if you push the engine, you will use some oil. The fact the oil goes black means it is doing its job of retaining the contaminants! If you want perfect oil by the time of the next scheduled oil change, don't rag the car, pootle around all day instead. But then what's the point of having the car! :)

going to sound like a dick but the best oil to use is....

the search button! covered 999999999 times on this forum.

but the general consensus is Amsoil 0W-30 is the best
if you cant be stuffed contacting Wayne hill to get the Amsoil the 5W-30 Mobil ONE is good too

But technically 0 weight oil and actually 5 weight oil is mainly for places that are cold as a mofo

as per:

-10°C to 40°C or higher = 20W-40
-20°C to 40°C or higher = 10W-30
-30°C or lower to 35°C = 5W-30

"0 weight" "5 weight"

the W does not mean weight

Is to do with the viscosity of the oil when it is cold. the higher number is the viscosity of the oil when it is hot.

and yes you are partially right, thinner (less viscous) oils are used in colder temps. but lots of modern engines use thinner oils, even in higher climates, to reduce frictional losses, which helps with economy and power.

Lolololololol I can't believe the amount of times that I have heard mechanics call it that hahaha

yeah its a common fallacy. good old fast and the furious didn't help that one. to be honest it doesn't matter what you call it as long as you understand that the numbers represent a liquids SAE viscosity for a given temperature.

Yep, basically the oil for the VR-4 is a 30 weight oil.

Be cautious about buying a 'fully synthetic oil' as it is clear that the label is not always how it is...
