Had a small get together a few weekends ago during which some tool decided it would be a fantastic idea to jump on my carbon bonnet putting a few nice
cracks in it.
It looks like only the clear coat type layer on the top has cracked. Its quite noticeable so i'm wanting to get it fixed, is it possible
have it resurfaced or something? Anyone had anything similar happen? :(

Have a friend who does bodywork he managed to recoat a carbon bonnet but you have to be careful not to go to deep n chatch the carbon

Hi Jesse,

Grrrr? I dont see why you could not put resin back on to it but have a look on the underneath of your bonnet as that will probably be where all the damage will be. We teach guys to look on the back if composite panels when inspecting for damage as it springs back and looks normal. With panels we scarf out the damage and then build the layers back up but it will effect the look of it.

I'm sure Peter Mann and ginger fish will drop in as they have a lot of composite experience, I can only mention what we do in the forces but generally all our panels aren't load bearing.

Hope this helps.

I'm no expert but as Tam said, you will need to have a good look on the underside and judge for yourself just how damaged it is.

In reality, if the cracks have gone right through and weakened the bonnet (i.e. it bends along the crack), it's quite possibly had it!

CF is pretty bloody strong though and through alot of heating and cooling, the likelyhood is that it's just surface cracks in the resin. In time, it can shatter.

It all depends on how deep your pockets are. You could sand and re-coat with another layer of resin, sand and add a laquer top-coat just to give it a shiny finish or hand it over to an auto-body specialist and threaten to cry in his worksop until he fixes it! lol.

Looks like its just the resin that has cracked. Pockets aren't too deep at the moment. I wonder if it would be cheaper to just get it painted instead.

That's good news.

You could go paint or indeed vinyl wrap.

Wouldn't mind a vinyl wrap of some sort. Looks pretty neat. Not alot of places round here that do it though :P

Could always get it painted with a decal and then peel it off before the clear coat as a hint to the carbon bonnet thast underneath it..Or just paint it where the damage is so it could be repaired and then filled.

Or fade black paint over the damage and leave the edges carbon then clear I've seen this before makes you look twice to see if it's carbon or not I might do this in the summer
