No heater on the way to work this morning, smelled a bit hot, pulled over just as temp gauge shot up - no water. I can see a leak from near where the TCL unit would be. Breakdown man reckoned it was the heater matrix. Does this sound right to you people?

Or pipework heading in that direction?

so I've been told that the heater matrix on most cars is inside the car - is that true of a vr4?
The heater matrix is in the cabin, so I would expect a wet carpet if it was that.
Refill it and check that nothing is leaking in the engine bay.

it lost 4 litres of water in about 10 mins - had some strange noises from inside the dash but can't see any wet carpets. Can defo see dripping pipes near the tcl unit though

if you have dripping pipes then replace the pipe and see what happens hopfully for you it will be one of you flexible rubber heater pipes that has failed.
