Hey,

my tweeters are blown and I think i have enough spare speakers (if the rear or fronts are 6"?) kicking around to replace them in the legnum.

my question is i've never actually had a car with tweeters in it before and was wondering what size they need to be to fit and if i need a special bracket.

would a component set work? and how?
im thinking of staying with pioneer/polk/rockford/kenwood/infinity (unless theres a better brand for components/tweeters?) so if someone wants to throw me a link to something that works that would be awesome.

i already have an amp and 2 12" subs and a pioneer head unit.

TBH if the tweeters are dead, I would just replace them with another set of standard ones.

Steve-vr-4ish has some for sale I think.

I replaced the other 4 speakers in the car with more powerful JBL's and the difference is very much noticable, even with standard tweeters. Unless you want want to go b@lls out with serious ICE.

Seeing as my mentioning skills leave a lot to be desired, here's the thread just for reference http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?68425-The-final-everything-under-one-for-sale-thread-UPDATED-20th-JULY. Post #6

Just a quick addition, is your amp just running subs?
If its running doors as well, i wouldn't recommend putting OEM tweets in, good chance you'll pop em in a week..... if not a day :flamed:

If you flutter your eyelashes at him and offer him beer tokens, it might do the trick!

.......... and :iagree: with Mark.

I have these in my front doors:
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-spg-17cs
I am very happy with them.

I think I have some stock tweeters around, but don't quote me! I'll check if you want me to?

6" stuff can be made to fit, but the speaker mounting points are designed for 6.5". I have fitted 6" infinities in mine in the past. I wouldn't buy infinity again - the sound was good for the price but the build quality was poor. The cone and the rubber roll on the driver was in poor (unusable) shape after 5 years.

muahaha you have been quoted!
nah.. thats good to know that they are 6.5"

is it really not worth getting aftermarket tweets?
i found these http://www.ebay.ca/itm/ROCKFORD-FOSGATE-PRIME-R1T-S-1-CAR-AUDIO-TWEETERS-KIT-NEW-R1TS-/330947589023?pt=Car_Speakers&hash=item4d0e03739f&_uhb=1

Just get a 6.5" component set. Most tweeters can be made to fit behind the stock grill - just be careful with those clips as they are easy to break.

Nick Mann

Yep, I would go with the components option. In fact I did!

I replaced the tweeters as well and just hot-glued them behind the tweeter grill. Works since 5 years now...

I have this set installed in front: http://www.focal.com/en/access-archives/91-165-a1-3544055750604.html
rear: http://www.focal.com/en/access-archives/94-165-ca1-3544052750607.html

You can find some basic measurements for the tweeter too. I used no housing, just the bare tweeter and hot glued it into the tweeter grille.

I personally would no consider to just replace the woofers and leave the tweeter stock. The stock setup of tweeter and woofer is not separated by a crossover - they are simply wired together. So you will have a higher impendance, leading to less efficiency of your headunit/amplifier.

So rip out the old stuff, connect the crossover to the wires leading to the woofer and rewire the whole thing - the result will be way better. Oh, and don't forget to sound deaden the doors to make use of the full performance of the woofers.

Defo remove standard tat!
Currently running Alpine SPR 60C components front doors and Alpine SPR 60 2 way rear doors. With a CDR 117ri head unit and Alpine 4 ch in boot. Also s#*t loads of chimney lead flashing (cheaper equivalent to Dynamat) on the inner panels.
Internal mirror still manages to do an epileptic despite no subs :D

They actually are, there is a resistor in behind the tweeter that is a crude version of a crossover.

Like the attached image...

Nick Mann

Very crude! It's effectively acting as a low pass filter - the woofer still gets all the frequencies.

Or if you've got a semi decent head unit you can vary the frequency to your speakers :)

You need a head unit with active crossovering to control it properly, can be done off amps but its crude. Sooo much easier just using passive speakers with crossovers.

Normal crossovers on head units only allow you to low or high pass and are very limited in their frequencies.

Those will go decently. I'd suggest that you replace the standard speaker wiring through the door with some decent stuff while you are at it - it's a bit of a mission but well worth it, especially if you want to replace them later on.

Run them off an amp if you can as this will mean cleaner sound, and when you turn it up it won't distort as quickly.

As Wintertidenz said ....amp them!! as i assume the subs a bit overpowering at the mo?

You can do what Mark did or make a mdf baffle with the factory one as a template. Then you will be able to seal the mid to the door...

I bought some wooden rings to fit between speaker and plastic. Problem solved...

wintertidenz

MDF baffle painted is the best way to go. Use at least 12mm if you can make it fit as it'll prevent any movement.

If you really want to go for it, sound dampen both skins of the door, and close up the holes in the door with MDF panels cut to size and painted - it will make it a lot clearer and bassier.

McDonalds or similar trays with screws are better as they dont need painting and you can take them off if you need to. Just seal them with some form of tape sealant between it and the door.. and put some sound deadening on it.. :P

Does a baffle go all around the speaker (like the plastic mounting but with no hole) to bounce the sound back or are they just rings so the steel doesn't vibrate?

CANDEE

Here is how mine is done:

66588

Thats an 18mm mdf baffle that replaces the factory speaker mount. You can run something similar to this to go over the factory one in a 9mm or 12mm.
