can anyone explain what caused this to happen, plus took some pics of the bearings inside the manual gearbox, the mainshaft ball bearing is fine,it's just the needle type bearing outer baskets have play,u can move it up and down,is that normal or does it need changing???

The needle type bearings expand when they heat up and should then fit snug. How much play there should be when cold is a question I do not have an answer for.

Good you've found out the flywheel has broken / has cracks before it all went flying off and destroying everything in it's path! How this can happen I don't know. On my VR2 I had a flywheel with many minor hairline cracks that was obviously caused by heat (by seeing the discoloration) and after 270.000km of abuse ;)

I've not seen a flywheel do that on a VR4 before. Good effort! I wonder if it is related to rubbing in the bellhousing?

it is a fair b et as that is the point of the flywheel will get all thepressure put on it if you pressure it from the engine end.

i believe it had somthing to do with the pressureplate touching the gearbox housing...
