well the legnum 25ST may have a terminal oil leak and its just not worth fixing, been with me and the other half for 11years or so,
ill keep it going as long as i can. but its not looking good.

So will be keeping my eyes pealed for a modern Ute,

strictly nothing older than 2000, ideally 2005+
max $25k to spend, ideally $20k
most likely a diesel,
it has to be 4wd,
double cab,
service friendly (and not Fugly).

but really dont know much about utes, which ones to avoid?? the good the bad and the down right crap??

You cant really go wrong with a 2005+ Toyota Hilux and the new Ford Ranger XLT/Wildtreks are bloody nice to drive. They look good too.

the only problem i've heard with the 2005+ hiluxs is they go through clutches every 30k kms

Can't say I'm a fan of the new Lux's. The Fords are awesome power wise but I believe there's a common fault with either the transfer case or gearbox being a bit weak. Navara ST-X goes great.

Wouldnt touch the new shape ranger / bt50 with a 40 foot barge pole. They are a **** truck and not put together well at all. I could go into the issues but I could be here all night.
Previous generation BT50 is a good truck, but I wouldn't buy a manual as the duel mass flywheel is weak.
That is bull**** about the hilux clutches unless you drive like a meat axe.
Go for production date after may 2011 hilux as they have 15k service intervals instead of the 7500km. You also don't have to do the injector seals every 45k on the 2011+ hilux.

So yeah, previous gen bt50 auto or 2011 + hilux. If you look at any hiluxs flick me a txt with the details and I can look into it

My Uncle has the new Wildtrek Ranger and its perfectly fine. He's done 10k-15k km in it, driven all over NZ and it hasnt cocked out or anything. Its a good ute

I have heard through someone I know that worked at nissan that the Navaras had problems with the rear axles coming out of the diff!
I have driven a Mitsi triton (as the are known here) and they fell cheaply made. That said I have only driven a real poverty pack one.

He must have about the only one! :p
I assume the injector pump pulley hasn't fallen off yet? :p
The biggest concern is if you have them in 4wd and turn hard lock, they pop the front CVs apart! Even more of a concern is that ford don't really see it as an issue!

Don't get me wrong, they are nice trucks and they go well, however i wouldn't touch one.... I know too much. :p

To be honest 4wd utes hold value very well. You will get a higher k bt50 for that money.
You could always go new and get a Great Wall, but I have heard mixed opinions of them. They do run Mitsi running gear which is a plus

Subaru ETA

Essentially a holden Colorado. Haven't heard anything bad. When I did roadside assistance we looked after isuzu and only ever to toe them due to driver error.
The one comment I have about the ones I drove was the gear lever throw is huge. But not a biggie
