Easiest way to find out is to measure the wires with a volt meter and resistance meter.
Measure with the light off resistance to car chassis, one will be chassis ground.
Then use volt meter on other wires and turn lights on, one of the wires will be 12v. Then get someone to push the brake pedal and measure the other wire it should now 12v. On off brake pedal on off 12v.

It does not get much simpler than this in car electrics.

I agree, you just need a multi-tester in find out which wire to tap at. By the way make sure to secure it with a heat shrink tube just to be safe and clean.
