quick one, are there any pros in putting in a k&n panel filter over the cheapo stock ones?

Better flow. /yes

If you can get hold of a foam one, like HKS, that's also a good shout, and doesn't require any oiling.

is there any difference in induction sound?

Nothing noticeable, IMO. The filter is still enclosed in the standard air box so shields much of the sound.

I noticed a sound difference between stock and a Ralliart panel filter. :)

How long should the HKS filters be in? Can they be cleaned?

Yeah they can be cleaned, or you can buy a replacement foam peice for them.

That could also be an idea.

What is the cleaning process? Most of the stuff that I've been able to find online seems to refer to wet filters. Can you just use soapy water?

I would have thought so. Although all water should be run through from the engine side of the filter, as this would help remove the dirt and stuff.

whats the sound difference like if the induction pipe is replaced for a metal pipe with cone filter.

I suspect that it would be much the same. I used to have a Starlet and the dump valve became quite audible when I put on a pod filter, whereas it was inaudible before. That was compared to a paper filter in an airbox though.

I get plenty of noise with the foam filter though (with boost at 10psi), so I'm not sure it's worth messing up the MAF air flow with a pod just for the sound.

My recirc valve was really loud in the car when it didn't have standard airbox, rather quiet with airbox now
