View Full Version : movement in front drivers side drive shaft...

I've noticed since having my engine replaced an intermittent knock in the steering, very small, very intermittent but usually occurs when dry steering...

Jacked the car up and had a good look at the suspension and steering components and all is solid. I inspected the front drive shaft and found the drivers side had about 5mm -10mm of play in and out... No play in any other direction or when turned....

Other than the small knock every now and then it drives absolutely fine... Having said that should I be looking to replace anything?

i wouldnt expect any play in the front shafts, unless you disconnected the lower straight control arm, the inner cv is designed to move in and out, but the outer cv should have none, picture below is of how the inner cv is designed

As above. The shaft length has to change with steering input and suspension compression so the inner joint as Seans picture above is designed to move in and out. The outer joint should be nice and tight.

So from what you say above, likely culprit would be the outer cv joint? Or at least a good place to start....

Would this be the correct part..
