The car has been playing up a bit lately. Seeming as if it was a dead battery by struggling to wind over, but once it starts to wind it improves. Only happens when cold, just usually need to turn the keys off and then on again and it starts. I'm thinking the starter motor is on its way out . Does anybody have any pointers on where to get one, any particular things to look out for ?

stick up a WTB (Want To Buy) thread on here and someone will come along and offer you one.

i would offer to sell ou one but you are in NZ and think the shipping will be a bit expensive.

Probably best to just bite the bullet and get a new one. Any auto electrician should be able to supply you one or you could have yours rebuilt.
