To start again from the original thread, the plan is now to meet at Donnington for a chat and a bit of spectator sport, leave at 12 ish to a pub for a spot to eat, maybe have a drive somewhere and go home again.

I have provisionally booked us in to the Turks Head in Castle Donnington for food. They have told me they have a reasonable car park at the front and a private function room we can use if there are lots of us! Meals seem to be about £4.50, less for burgers, more for large steaks.

I think that I will intend to get to Donnington for 10 ish. That gives us a couple of hours to chat and compare notes before heading for a warm pub and food!

The original list of people is below, with confirmed added as you all confirm! Please say how many of you there will be, as I need to give the pub an idea on numbers.

Current Attendees:

Nick Mann (& Vicky) Confirmed!
Interlec (& a gaggle?!) Confirmed!
Jimbo Confirmed!
Brunty Possibly in a rover 200!!
bernmc (& wife) Confirmed!

Physician (No. 43!) (& daughter) Confirmed!

I'm from the jungle - what do you expect?

And continuuing my fine tradition of off-topic posting:
When I was back in the jungle, we were pottering around some really rural part of Natal/kwazulu and made friends with one of the local chiefs. He had an old Isuzu van half buried in sand lurking in the yard which he hadn't been able to drive for a while because one of the wheel-bearings had siezed. He spotted my toolbox and asked me if I'd have a go at changing the bearing for him. So we scrabbled about a bit, but couldn't get the jack to work in the soft sand - just kept sinking. 'No problem' says he, sticks his fingers in his mouth and gives a loud whistll. From a scattering of huts in different directions emerge his seven wives.... 'Pick up the truck' he says (No way I thought - never mind the weight of the truck, it was half buried!). Anyway, the seven gather round the front corner (chief sitting in his chair sipping a beer), give the zulu equivalent of 1-2-3, and so help me, hoik the flipping truck out of the sand! And stand there holding it while I pile rocks/planks etc underneath to keep it up. Those women were STRONG! Comes from lugging 40 litres of water 5 miles a day I guess.

Just don't argue with one of them eh!

I'm hoping to make it - but I doubt I'll now be able to join you all in the pub.

The car is currently at the transmission specialists - if I get it back before the weekend I'll be in the VR4 otherwise it'll be the neighbours Rover 200 :embarasse

Fingers crossed

I hope this doesn't turn out like so many others.......lots of planning preparation and promises for only 4 or 5 people to turn up.........

I know people have other commitments, and that is fine, I do as well. But these meets are for the benefit of new members so that they can get in to the scene and put faces to names and see other examples of VR4s. It works both ways, us 'established' members are keen to see newbie VR4s as well.......its no good me turning up to look at Derek and Nicks car.......I know what they look like and how they go and what mods they have done and all that jazz!

I dont mean to rant, but I just have....I think!

I'm looking forward to me meeting some of the guys................and girls i hope :)
As Dave says, good for nOObs to meet and greet, get ideas, pointers etc
I myself would be a bit disapointed to spend a fortune in fuel travelling half way accross the country only to find 4 cars there!!!
That is one thing i liked about the FTO club - plenty of MM's with our local ones 25 miles away and then a drive to the seaside or something.
So i hope this community is the same................. :)

Look forward to Sat - even if it is a crazy start time for a MM (have to LEAVE my house at about 7.15 - on a SATURDAY!!!)................

Nick,

I may have missed it somewhere in the posts but have we decided ROUGHLY where we are meeting at Donington Park (large area).

If not, may I suggest the Museum car parking area unless someone knows a more precise location.

Nick Mann
17-03-2005, 09:30 PM
Absolutely! The pub is the Turks Head, almost on the main road through Castle Donnington. We will be there by 13:00. (Sooner if it is cold/wet!)

And still more people are committing! Brilliant!

Erk. Forgot I'm working tonight. Finish at 8am tomorrow, so I'll probably go straight to Donnington from there. It's about 50 miles, so an hour in the sheepmobile:embarasse. I'll be in the museum car park as planned. If I'm snoring quietly with a bit of drool down my face, wake me up gently!/yes

LOL @ bernmc!!

To my neighbours amazement, I washed the car at 21:00 last night! Raised a few eyebrows.... Heh!

This is a map of Castle Donnington. I am lead to believe that the Turks Head is roughly where I have put the red circle. I have not seen it with my own eyes though!

Good luck everybody!

It crossed my mind ......

I'm sure a number of us will be taking some video shots tomorrow.

I was thinking that I might LEAVE Donington Park Circuit en route to the Pub LAST in the convoy and then overtake each of you one by one to get y'all on video. Once I am ahead of y'all I'll speed ahead to the Pub carpark and video y'all arriving.

The only point is that it's a fairly short journey and I may not be able to get past all of you before the pub ..... but I can try! So ....... if that's OK with y'all PLEASE let me past when I flash you (headlights!) and don't think I'm just trying out my racing lines.

It may be preferable if we took a slightly longer route but we can discuss that tomorrow ....... select a leader who has worked out a route and start a convoy. (Nick? Routemaster?)

It'll be nice for those not coming and others in NZ to see us all.

Great day everyone.

As has been mentioned already - a big thanks to the guys and gals who came from such a far distance and Nick for making all the arrangements.

I was quite surprised at how slow all your cars are ........ I managed to overtake all of you :smug: :smug: :smug: :joker:

I'll post up the video as soon as possible as well as some still shots. Just edited and compressed the video with some new settings and it finished at 12.63Gb ..... eeeeek - so trashed that and am starting again. Either way it's some 11 mins long and will be a bit on the large size I'm afraid. If anyone has problems let me know and I'll make an alternative 'slashed to the bone' copy.

By the way on a personal note, a big, big thanks to you, Rich, not only for buying me lunch, but for the extremely kind offer of a loan of your camera/mount for Germany.

It was very, very tempting but I figure the chances to use it in car would be so minimal and with all the stuff I'm taking I'd be so terrified of breaking or losing it. :embarasse. The offer was a really nice one though :)

I will still definately be getting some track side video for everyone to see, I have my Ixus and Heath/Jane have a video camera, so between us we'll get some bystander action. Hopefully we can coordinate a CVR4 lap with one of us videoing at one of the many vantage points - if we can find them ;)

I'm taking my laptop with me too, just so my 256mg CF card doesn't fill up too quick ;)
