Hi Guys,

I'm the proud owner of a 1997 Galant VR4 that has now fallen ill due to a faulty ECU (about 8 faults, the most noticeable is that the APC is turned off) and to add to my woes the Air Mass Fuel Meter is faulty. My very good mechanic has tried Mitsubishi and other Japanese specialist for these parts to no avail. So any help from Club VR4 members would be greatly appreciated. Apart from this the car is mechanically sound and I would hate to part with it.

Regards.

Hi Aljie!

I'm sure we can help you out here.

First off, getting a definitive list of the faults will help us to identify what is actually at fault - a combination of faults could identify one issue, which gives the impression of more.

The best way of doing this is using the "flashy dash" procedure - where you can simply use a paperclip in the diagnostic port, and the various lights on the dash will flash. Many computerised diagnostic tools do not know how to talk to the Mitsubishi ECUs correctly, and may give incorrect results.

List of error codes:

How to read them:

Once we have a definitive list of codes - we can advise you - and I'm sure someone will have the parts you need (if you do need any parts) - we'd rather work with you to diagnose the issue fully, rather than get you buying random parts just because a computer says it might be faulty!

Also - whereabouts in the country are you? Someone local may be able to assist - such as by lending components to allow you to try a known good item, to allow you to know for definite if you need the part!

Hi and welcome to the club.
Its very unusual for a VR4 ecu to go faulty, we don't have many reports like this on the forum.

Its worth posting up a wanted add one here as that's the easiest way to get hold of parts.

To me looks like it may be GND issue as lots of listed sensors share GND cable.
Its a huge list, it could be ecu, but how he managed to read faults from faulty ecu?
I think I may have working PFL ecu here if you actually need one.

Without knowing how your mechanic got the codes, I'd recommend doing the flashy dash procedure linked above. The only reader that I know that is able to properly read codes is a MUT II but even that needs the right module too.

How does the car drive? A faulty maf will cause issues but as others have said, I have not seen a failed ecu in normal use.
