I get this when doing 50kph sometimes with my vr4. Shudders like crazy and I need to give it the boot to get it to change gear.

I get this doing about 50km too, but only when going up the hill. I have to let my foot off the peddle and put it on again that seems to fix it.

Would be keen to know why it happens though.

Sounds like you two have got the VR-4 lockup mechanism problem. Use the search facility and you should find out some information.

Breifly, it's a fairly common problem. The torque convertor locking mechanism develops a fault and doesn't (dis)engage when it should.

Anyone know any more about this 'transmission shudder' issue? Think i may be developing it in my VR4 auto. Main dealer is at a loss so far.
I tried doing a search as suggested but just got referred back to this thread! hehe :rolleyes5

Ive had a bit of this too, happened alot when i got the car, had the trannie and torque convertor flushed and refilled problem solved for ages, starting to come back now though, mindyou its only happened maybe twice in the last 4 months. spoke to a mitsi transmission specialist, or atleast thats what he claimed to be, and he said if it happens alot the torque convertor needs an overhaul and thats the thick end of 1000 slides.

not quite sure about that either. When I got my car it had a shudder at about 1750rpm, give or take 100prm, and worse under load, a tranny flash cured the problem, but not sure if its the same symptoms as yours.

These r the symptoms Ive got...

Its a violent shudder through the whole car - feels like a REAR wheel seriously out of balance at high speed (except that it always happens at LOW speed! hehe). Wheels and tyres have all been checked by me, dealer and tyre depot.

Always happens on a light throttle, usually cruising gently in traffic.

Always at low speed (30-50mph [45-75kph])

I can stop it juddering instantly by a slight adjustment of the throttle pedal, either up or down

It often happens when on a slight uphill gradient, never on a downhill gradient, and also when carrying passengers in back seat. .

It is intermittent.

Only happens when engine / transmission is warm

The main dealer has experienced it first hand and even had the laptop connected for fault diagnosis while it happened on a test drive but nothing showed up.
The engine throttle sensors have been changed and various electrical connections checked and cleaned but nothing found yet.

I guess the next thing 2 try is the torque converter lock-out?

get a tranny flush first, it sounds very similar to what I had, I thought it was something at the rear too, or perhaps even the centre or rear diff.

A transmission specialiast told me that I needed a new torque converter, a very common fault on these cars supposedly, until I went back to the dealer and he said "BOLLOCKS", so he sent it for the flush and bobs yer uncle.

exactly, a flush will fix it and if it doesnt your torque convertor is mothered and needs an overhaul.

So my torque convertor is mothered ;) Mentioned this to both mitsi and a transmission place I go to and they just laughed and said there was nothing wrong with the transmission.

Even though it was shuddering like crazy when I took them out for a drive ;)

We have had this problem on quite a few galants and legnums on our yard and every time we have a full trans service done then put in an additive with the trans oil and bingo instant fix. I have spoken to one of the head mechanics at mitsi and apparently what causes the shudder is a few of the solenoids getting gummed up. This means under light throttle situations the trans does not generate enough oil pressure to activate the solenoid properly. That is why you will find if you either put your foot down a bit more or change into tip mode and change down yourself the problem will disappear. One word of advice is to get the trans service done sooner rather than later as if you leave it for to long it can do serious damage which means serious money.
