Quite simply what the title states. I was advised of the need to replace either the oil seal or the torque converter by a Mitsu dealer. The car has now gone to a transmission specialist to have the work done under warranty but with out properly inspecting the gearbox the specialist has said that these types of transmission leaks are always a symptom of somthing considerably more severe.

So has anyone replaced a transmission oil seal and/or torque converter only to experience reoccuring problems?

Thanks in advance.

I had the transmission oil seal replaced when my car had done around 27k miles. It has now done over 100k with no further problems.

On the flipside to this, I had my torque converter seal replaced - then 500 miles later had to fork out £1500 to recondition the box.
It has been suggested by a few gearbox specialists that a connecting rod inside was poorly designed (ie. not long enough) and prone to failure (as in mine and Craig-1's experience) but I still believe that to be speculative.

The majority of gearboxes on this site have coped with mileage and constant torture reasonably well....

Hmmmm,

my vr-4 is going in for a new gearbox under warranty next week. took the dealer a year to figure it out. I get a bad vibration while fannying about at 30mph at around 1500 rpm they think its some kind of one way clutch in the gerabox, but im not convinced. these are the guys that have spent a year looking for a misfire when i kept telling them it was a transmission vibration.

They suddenly changed their tune with me when they found out I inspect and accept off contract all kinds of military vehicles on behalf of the MOD. For a while they thought I worked for the SVA so I did not discourage that beleief.

Now they have finally admitted they dont know whats wrong and are changing the box to see it that helps.

Anyway two day after I get it back I am off to crail to see what breaks :leer:
