So I've tried to solve this myself but I'm stumbed. Driving home and the car dies which what sounds like a pop started losing power then completely dead it will start and idle (fine at first but after a min or 2 Pretty rough) but won't drive it starts off gets a few feet and cuts out. My afr gauge is sitting at 7.4-8 and I have black smoke coming out the exhaust with what looks like soot mixed in. I've started to take it apart to have a look for leaks but thought I would put this up just in case there's anyone with previous experience of this or any ideas cheers in advance

Sounds a lot like the intake elbow connecting to the throttle body has popped off. That or the MAF.

In either case, disconnecting the MAF should help to diagnose. A VR4 will run (albeit poorly) with the MAF disconnected.

I'll go and have a look at the maf just now then the elbow didn't seem to be the issue I took it off and re seated it and it still doesn't want to play

It could also be a large boost leak somewhere else.

I've had a good look over all the hoses and nothing is standing out so I'm hoping it is just the maf

It could well be the maf. I'm just trying to cover bases. Also finding a leak can be free whereas a maf is very rarely free!

Yeah that's the first thing I looked for was leaks which is why I'm hoping it is the maf because it couldn't find any lol and I'm already used to spending money on this car try not to think about it to much haha

be careful buy a MAF for the VR4 you have to get the correct part number.
lots of MAF's look the same but have different part numbers.
