View Full Version : Might have trashed both turbos

And it's my own stupid fault. Had the intakes off whilst I was changing the gearbox and put a couple of pieces of kitchen roll in each turbo inlet to stop anything falling in. Forgot to take them back out and ran the car, realised there was no boost and came back. The turbo wheels are now packed with the stuff and hardly turn.

What are the odds of them being ok once I get a chance to clean them out or is it two new turbos time?

I'd have thought you will be okay, depending on how hot the bearings got. It's got to be worth cleaning them out and trying it.

I hope so, i did drive it steady for a bit before I put the foot down and found I had no boost so things will have been hot. Guess I'll not know till I take them off.

The rear is going to be a nightmare to remove!

Be gutted if I've wrecked them.. I'm supposed to be drag racing at Shakespeare next weekend for the first time since I did the VR4 conversion :(

Quick question.. can I get away without draining the oil before removing the turbos? I'm going to drain the coolant as I need to change it anyway.

Yes. You will lose a bit but not litres.

Boost is back. Turned out it was just the rear turbo that had the kitchen roll left in. Took both out, cleaned them up and refitted. Hitting 15psi again so hopefully I've got away with it. The rear turbine didn't look like it had been damaged...

Noticed the front turbo housing was coated in black soot. Does this mean a seal between the two sides of the turbo is failing?...

Not sure about the soot. With stock plumbing the recirc dump valve feeds back to the front turbo but I am a little bit lost as to how that intoduces soot. It could introduce oil which gets hot on the turbo maybe?

I am with nick on this one.
If seal fail then it would covered with oil. The exhaust gas would have to pass through the oil bearings before getting to the front turbo housing.
So I would go with a little vaporised oil from the inlet pipework which sucks the oil vapor from the rocker covers to be burnt in the engine.

Quick question, how hard was it to remove both turbos with the engine in the car. Did you have to remove much else to get at them! ( meaning the back one really)!

Cheers fellas, the black stuff may have been produced from when the engine and turbos were in the legnum then. With my setup I don't have anything re-circing back into the intake.

Louis, my VR4 engine is in an FTO. The rear turbo is a bit of a pain but wasn't as bad as I expected. Charge elbow off, plenum off, shifted some vac piping out of the way then removed the two coolant and one oil connection from the top end of the turbo. Then disconnected the bottom oil feed where it connects to the engine block, took the v-band clamp off the turbo and lifted it out. Wouldn't like to remove all the turbo manifold setup from the rear.. looks impossible without undoing a lot of stuff and trying to tilt the engine forward or taking the whole thing out.

I have a breather filter connected to the outlet on the rear bank than would normally go to the intake pipe

Ok so no active suck from the inlet pipework to suck oil vapor from the crank case other than PCV valve. Which will do the job.
