View Full Version : Exhaust popping on overrun

The kid in me has been playing around with the fuel and timing maps and I've got some great sounding popping with the occasional bang on the overrun.

Now to accomplish this I have stopped it cutting fuel on the overrun and instead trimmed it down so the AFR goes between 15 and 16. I've also retarded the timing to -5

As nice as this sounds I won't keep it if its going to cause any damage to exhaust valves or the turbo. Has anybody had this mapped into their car before without any issues in the long run?

Cheers

Adam adaxo has had this on his car for while.
It is basically an ignition retard in the area of lowest 3 rows of load and rev band 4500 to 7000.
So when you come of the throttle at high revs it ignites the mix in the exhaust stroke .
Pops and bang are fun for a while but get old very quickly.

Cheers Dave. I've not gone mad with it so it doesn't sound like a Focus ST with a pop/bang map bolted to it. Just trying to make it more 'performance car' sounding.

My standalone lets you have switchable maps on the fly so could wire a toggle switch in to turn it on and off

I'm 43 and there's no sign of it disappearing any time soon [emoji1]

A friend of mine has it on an evo with years with no issues .
He does go through exhaust gaskets yearly though lol

I had mine retarded -30 to accomplish the same on a switchable map I used it a fair bit for about 4 years before I sold my car with no issues

Did you do the fto with 6a13tt and standalone ECU.

How is that working out for you?

I did Dave, got the 6A13TT running with an ECUMaster EMU standalone in 2016.

Its been running great with it and I've learned a lot about what you can do with them since. I'm using ignition timing to control the idle and soon going to be removing the Apexi AVCR and have it controlling the boost as well

Yes as Dave said I run map with pops and bangs, good fun and you can easy learn to not use it if not want to, running like that for maybe 2 years so far without any issues, used sensibly, not reving for an hour on car show, BTW im 38 and was thinking im too old for that /haz

The kid will be there for a good while longer. Last year I heard a little voice from the back seat saying " Grandad...... why are you driving so fast? ".
I hope it never leaves. :d :d :d

The pops and bangs you hear will only damage the exhaust over a long time not the engine
It's just petrol/fumes igniting in the exhaust

I had a Daihatsu GTTi that spat blue flames out of the exhaust on acceleration and lift off
Engine was perfect after 20,000 miles (cannot comment after that as I Sold it)

Is it possible to make the exhaust pop on stock ECU though?

Yes if you car edit the ignition and fuel maps.
Bottom left abkut 6 cells of both maps require a change.
Rich up fuel and change timing to ignite fuel after the exhaust valve opens and it will pop and bang all day. If you want it to.
After high revs run just lift off quickly and you will hit the high revs low load cells and it will pop and bang.

But it will not do the turbos any good
