Hey team!

I'm in the process of preparing for a single turbo conversion and ive got myself stuck on what turbo to run !
Am looking for 400-500hp with minimal lag ( will be going forged bottom end in the near future)

Ive seen a couple of people use different turbos but i was considering using the Borgwarner s200sxe-52 with a 1.0AR housing but im abit worried that the housing is abit big and will be laggy and its the only housing i can find off the shelf . Or maybe a S200sx 56/65 with a .76 A/R
would appreciate some recommendations or advice as im abit lost with the whole turbo size thing, ive been more of a go from td05 16g to a 20g ��

The below is copied from a dsm site .
The results would be from 2.0 and 2.3 strokers.
Yes there are better turbos out there but bang for buck is good and they will take abuse.
Plus a 2.5 has potential to spool it sooner.
The bep housing mentioned is a bolt on housing for the early 4g63s .

The 8blade hx35 has a 56mm compressor inducer. This is found on 1995-1998 cummins manual pickups. The compressor flows 52 lb/min according to the compressor map. The bolton BEP housing (0.55 a/r) is enough to push the limit of the compressor. There's several 500whp 8blade hx35 cars out there with the bolt on housing. It reaches 20+psi by 3500rpms in 3rd with 272 cams. Smaller cams would equal a faster spool speed in most cases.

The 7blade hx35 has a 54mm compressor inducer. This is found on the 1999-2002 cummins manual pickups. The compressor flows 60lb/min according to the compressor map and logged results from a member here. The bolton BEP housing with the hx35 turbine wheel do not SEEM to have enough flow to really reach the potential of 60lb/min. But many have logged over 50lb/min so far and seen 500whp. The stock hx35 12cm^2 twinscroll turbine housing is a t3 flange housing. This mated to a NON-divided runner manifold has produced a 132mph trap speed with a full weight 1g AWD. This is about 600whp. So the flow is there with the stock housing if you use a non-divided manifold. The spool speed of the 7blade hx35 is similar to the 8blade hx35 with 20+ psi by 3500rpms in the bolton housing and by 4000rpms with the stock housing with a non-divided manifold.

I have a Garrett TA3410 with a .96 housing to go on mine. There is a member on here with a smaller turbo and it spools very quick but it runs out of puff. im aiming for full boost by 3500rpm.

Theres a guy with a Masterpower r545 aswell i think , thats a big housing !

It would spool really quick but be a restriction on a 2.5 and those housings are about 3_400 dollars.
The standard 12cm housing is .89 I think or you can get a Garrett housing machined that's .63.
It all depends what you want now and down the line or if your building it yourself you can change from the 12cm if it doesn't suit .
Have a look on the dsm forum ,you can also get the hx40 with a different housing again which may suit

I'm putting a hx35 on a 2.3 with a .55 purely for spool.
I'm surrounded by small country roads so I've no business
having a big turbo that needs lots of rpm

My goal is 500hp with quick spool if i go any further ill just buy a bigger/different turbo so im not super fussed about down the line , would the standard 12cm housing spool relatively quick ?

Sorry turbo stuff really isnt my strong suit

.55 will spool faster than a .89 ,but if .,89 suits only you can decide .
12 cm will spool quicker on a 2.5 depending on how everything else is set up of course.
I'll let you make you own mind up on what will suit.
It's good reading and keep in mind alot of info is based on 2.0/2.3

I think ill go for something similar size to a bep housing with a 56mm 8 blade as it seems to be what most people sre running with success

Just an update ended up going for a hx40/hx35 with a garret twin scroll turbine housing (.58A/R) machined to fit

Turbochargers NZ , with any luck should see quite early boost and not run out of puff too quickly . End up with a 6 blade 60mm compressor. Am definitely interested to see how this goes!
