View Full Version : Suspension upgrade - are Bilsteins worth the money over stock shocks?

The Shocks are on their way out on my vr4, they’re standard and a bit boat like (not sure if this is because they’re standard or more because they’re very worn! Or perhaps both?). I also have two snapped lowering springs too! So I’m looking to replace the shocks and springs, I have been looking at Bilstein B8s, any experience with these? I don’t want anything too harsh, it’s for road not track hence why I haven’t been considering coilovers, but I still want to avoid the boat like cornering. So, bilsteins?

And is there much difference in buying expensive branded lowering springs compared to unbranded?

Any advice will help, otherwise I’ll just use my own judgment Thanks! Alex

Driven about 15 different vr4s and the best combo for road use IMHO is tein springs with bilstein b6 shocks.

Thanks for your advice, good to know Bilsteins are the way to go. Have you experienced b8s? As they’re specifically designed to work with lowering springs I thought they would give a better ride? Or b6s still feel better over the two? -Alex

I didn't drive on B8 so not sure what's the difference but they more expensive and according to bilstein Web and as you say only difference is they designed to work with shorter spring. IMO not worth to pay much more over B6 ones.

I have the Tein springs and shocks and think they are a good combo but I am not sure if they are B6 will have to find a photo to upload.

I’ve been looking into this, TEIN have discontinued springs for galant/Legnum, demon Tweeks sell a small range of springs for our cars though.

If you see anywhere selling old stock of Teins let me know, I’d like a set too! Thanks

Hi, you just need the spring rate you want and the diameter and length and you can buy from various sources :)
D2 suspension let you buy sprigs separately for £30 each but not sure if they are still going?

Good find! Which site did you order from? Let us know if it’s all okay!

Good point Louis, if I can find spring rates for the TEIN springs I’ll have a shop around

Edit: just realised, this is for non vr4 and for US version, not sure if it’s the same or accurate!!

These are for coilovers not to fit with standard type shocks which this thread is about?

Thanks for pointing that out, think I may end up going the coilover route if I can find a pothole friendly set

I do have one of my vr4s on teins coilovers 8.0kg front and 5.0kg back this exact set (https://www.part-box.com/tein-street-flex-coilover-kit-for-mitsubishi-legnum-vr4-gsr42-51ss3) and on the other vr4 stock front and stock spring with bilstein b6 at the rear and 90% daily driving I choose stock, tein are very harsh and 245/45/18tyres dont help either. Thing is, suspension subject is very hard to discuss as for one rock hard wil by too soft for other.

That’s a shame, DemonTweeks are selling a set of Vogtland lowering springs for about £100 when I last checked

Seriously if you can get a good set of adjustable coilovers. few others I know run b6/8 combo with springs and even they comment that my setup feels much better for s treet and spirited driving

Another let down for me as ebay seller cancelled order.
Anyone knows specs for Tein S rear springs for Legnum or know where I can buy any springs, lowering or standard as seriously I'm lost. Demon T weeks has some but it says for 2wd vr4?

ATatar

Yes says the same for me, this set on demon tweeks says it will fit my vr4: https://www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/eibach-pro-kit-lowering-spring-kit-eibe6028-140/

Not cheap though

Not Legnum unfortunately.
I might get set of rear springs from Mike /Viamoto KYB and keep front on Tein as must move Legnum from the ramp as I have to start working on galant

They are rear teins for Legnum, has been slightly modified to fit coilovers but after a short run, maybe a mile, i did swap back to original coilovers springs, Up for grabs, just make me an offer
