Hello all,

Have been a VR-4 owner/fan (never met an owner that isn't) for about a year but it's all coming to an end...

...To cut a long story short, I was selling the car anyway as I've now got a company car (Not a VR-4 sadly) and couldn't afford both, but to keep the Mitsy ticking over properly, I've been taking her out at least once a week. Problem is, I took her out last week and I've lost third/fourth/fifth gear from the gearbox and haven't a clue as to what to do.

As I see it I have a few options but I'm after advice as to what's the best option.

Mitsubishi have quoted £6853 for a new box...hmmm.

I've only found one place (recommended by Extreme) called AGS is Cannock that are willing to strip it down to have a look for me, problem is if it needs parts, he says he can't do it.

Given I've found out about the rarity of spares the hard way, I could just break her for spares, depending on what the demand for VR-4 bits is like. (Had the AYC pump changed about 500 miles ago so there's plenty of new bits on her).

Any pearls of wisdom (or generous donations around £6,000) as to what I could do are welcome.

You could try

Midland Automatic Transmissions (http://www.automaticgearbox.co.uk) based in Kettering
01536 517866

...who helped me with mine. You could typical expect to do all the calling and chase them, car wasn't finished within the stated time, etc...however the gears worked properly when the car was returned and comes with a 12 months parts and labour warranty.

Problem with the INVECSYS is that it'll cost a lot of money just to get the problem diagnosed, it'll then cost a lot more money to get it fixed.....but you're already working this out for yourself!

Good luck.

You could try getting a second hand one. My local Jap specialist has got a couple of engines etc in the past - may be worth a try ?

Before you go and pay out silly money .. Have you had it fault coded or have you just decided it needs a new box and have asked Mitsy for a quote ??
Reason i ask is that the Previous owner of my Missus Legnum had the gearbox rebuilt after it went KAPPUT.. It was like yours not selecting all the gears ..
After he had it rebuilt it was still doin the same .. After further tests it was found that the gearbox temperature sensor was reading that the gearbox oil was Minus 12 degrees .. The sensor was changed and the problem sorted .. !
Did the problem start abruptly or did it emerge over time .. ??
If it started abruptly it is a possibility that it's an electrical fault .. If it emeged over time then it probably is mechanical and you need a new box ..
Just summat else to try before you splash out .. :inquisiti

My friend just replaced his broken auto box on a VR-4 Type S with a used one (second hand from Japan), even with all the customs fees it came around 500$.

From what iv'e seen of other quotes of New boxes and my own quote of £7500 , £3500 sounds bl**dy cheap .. And if that was a legitamate New Box i would have gone for that option .. !! /yes

Possibly a misunderstanding here .. I don't need a new box .. Miines spot on ,i had mine rebuilt 14months ago at a cost of £2300 inc Vat.. It was done under warranty .. But if i could have got a New box for £3500 i would have pushed for that option .. /yes
