Cat two is immobiliser only I think. Cat 1 is alarm + immob. You can usually upgrade, but I don't know specifics for cobra.

What is Thatcham Approval? thatcham approved

The insurance industry recognises the following approved categories of electronic vehicle security:

* Category 1 - Alarm and Immobiliser Systems
* Category 2 - Immobilser Systems
* Category 2:1 - Alarm Systems that upgrade existing Cat 2 immobilisers to a Cat 1 system

All Thatcham approved products have exceeded the stringent testing procedures and standards required

Maybe only your immob meets thatcham std then, and the alarm bit doesn't? Or perhaps it is in fact a full cat 1?

I was under the impression that the Diamond HF3 (The Mitsubishi name for the Cobra Alarm fitted to the UK models) was a Cat 1? :inquisiti

I have had a cat 2 and a cat 1 cobra alarm on previous galants. The only difference from a user point of view is that on the cat 1 the immobiliser kicks in after 30s if you don't start the car.

The fobs were the same, the controls the same, they even sounded the same. What was different inside the box of tricks I can't say.

get it checked by an alarm specalist I booked mine in to upgrade my sigma system from cat2 to cat 1, they quoted me 250 quid going by the sigma price list, but when they actually started to work on it they realised the only difference was a battery back up for the siren, so they changed the siren charged me £50 and gave me a certificate :thumbsup:

i have the diamond hf3 system in my galant, and since i had a flat battery it has lost its silent arming setting thus leaving me with a loud double beep on arming.

not really a big deal but as i drive to work v early it has disturbed the kids in bed, so i have taken to locking it with the key. not good.

i've been to my local specialist and he said bonnet open, drivers door open, press big button for 3 sec. it didn't work

any help out there as the mitsubishi manual doesn't help.

My UK Galant has a Cat1 Mitsubishi Elite 3 - fobs look identical to Cobra ones - and doesn't beep when arming/disarming, just flashes indicators. Nothing in the little instruction leaflet mentions beeps when arming - don't think this model does it.

An upgrade from Cat2 to Cat1 is easy - there are specific systems on sale to do this - we had it done to our Smart car - a Cobra something-or-other with siren, sensors and battery backup was added to the standard Smart Cat2 immobiliser to get it up to Cat1.
£150 rings a bell, but I could be wrong?
