I just rebuilt my machine over the weekend, was fed up with it going so damn slow.. Tried to defrag it, as it looked like a spaghetti rainbow - it was that fragmented, it just laughed at me and said, this is the best I can do..

you seem to be getting on fairly quickly :)

Defrag will only work well if you have at least 15% of spare disk space
Otherwise it goes a bit spammy

My puter is full of crap too, I really should stop downloading free trials! I haven't a clue what most of them are now.
I have an 80GB HD totally full and a 60GB with WindowsXP and about 8GB free space, and a 120GB slowly decreasing in size. :INSERT INTO post VALUES ( bought a DVD writer the weekend so that has been keeping me quiet. :)

I gave my dad my old PC when I built my own, it only has an AMD K6 2 3D processor and 128MB of ram, he bought a 128mb PCI graphics card the other day to speed it up, the main board doesn't have AGP unfortunately and everything is zapping power from the CPU.
The card hasn't really helped! he is also running XP which has made it slower compared to when it was on 98.
Can't afford to go out and buy a whole new unit.

The computer is still very jerky.. would upping the RAM memory help and if so how much do reckon would be enough?

Have you tried upping the virtual memory ???

I would guess upping the mem to 256 would help a lot to be honest

I have a AMD athlon xp 1800+
1.53 Ghz and 224 Ram and it wizzes a long

I've tried the virtual memory but it hasn't improved a great deal, the hard drive is very slow aswell. :INSERT INTO post VALUES (

So you reckon bung in another 128mb stick?

I have the same processor as you in my comp, I do alot of video compression and the like and it works a treat. :)

Nick

Try the set up I have with my laptop and PC - got a Belkin Wireless USB Adapter into the PC and a Belkin Wireless Notebook card in the laptop and got wireless broadband on the laptop with BT Openworld :D

Just got to have the PC fired up as well of course but it allows me to roam around the house/garden :D Should cost around £95 max for both bits

Yeah I was thinking about this earlier wireless does seem good
As long as no one decides to attack you or sniff your network

I only have a 2 bedroom house so it seems a bit pointless to be honest
Plus all I need to do is run a telephone line plugged into
ADSL modem and I could be sitting in the garden with me lappy
Might look into it though
I have some mates INSERT INTO post VALUES (geeky ones lol )that are always buying new stuff for there computers at home
So I might be able to sponge something off them :D
