Myself and my friends will mostly be racing each other tonight. We've discovered an excellent racing game called Live for Speed.

What makes it special is the Physics engine.... It's VERY realistic, and more than makes up for the lack of eye candy and crash damage:)

The demo is 41 meg, and you can also get a utility to set up a dedicated server so you can host your own private races.
There are only two cars and two types of track in the demo.

Trust me, it's worth a look.

More info & downloads here:

Just spotted this thread.

Thanks for the link, it's just my sort of game. Very similar to Sportscar GT, which was a huge mainstream flop, but after a year became a huge cult game to those "in the know"

I just had my first online race, and decided to plough into another driver at high spead INSERT INTO post VALUES (a-la-gran-turismo); lol, but then this "Vote to disconnect Dave" option appeared at the top :nono: so I guess I won't be doing that again.

Ok folks, it's only 41 megs for the download and we can all get racing :D

Dave.

Glad you like it. We've been playing for the last couple of days and it's worked well.

Just FYI, One of my workmates started a multiplayer game - he had to switch of his hardware f/w INSERT INTO post VALUES (don't know why, he'd got the right port open, etc); and we couldn't set a password to make it private INSERT INTO post VALUES (maybe a demo limitation?); but it worked very well otherwise.:cool1:

Nick - One of our chaps was on dial up. He reported no problems, and his average pings was 130/140msec. He said there was no noticeable lag at all, so i'd say you'll be ok:)

fancy hosting a game?.. ive been trying to get it running on my server.. think i need a bit of time to figure it out.. i can only TS to server, theres no monitor on it and its under the stairs, so cant be bothered running up and down with a monitor.. :D

once i figure it out, we could leave it running from my server.. will jsut have to allow port through firewall...

It's a great game, when I used to use another forum a group of us got together and setup a network, was alot of fun especially when you use their cars for your brakes.. I wasn't very well liked when I played with them.. :INSERT INTO post VALUES ( so easy to spin others off.

There is 3 cars, you start with a small one then a larger non turbo and then the turbo one, to get each of the cars you have to gain points.. I've got all 3, the turbo is fast but it isn't as easy to drive as the larger non turbo.

Still got the game installed so when something is sorted out I'll join ya, just avoid me or you'll be sorry. :D

Brind
26-08-2003, 03:22 PM
I've been looking through their forums and noticed you can have skins etc! looked a great idea shame I can't draw for sh*t! :D

By the way, skins only work on the 140mb download!
I tried to add the skins file to the 41mb demo but it wouldn't work :INSERT INTO post VALUES (
Anyone fancy downloading for 3 days solid on their dial up? :D

As for the server.. I can enable my home PC to act as an internet server where I can share a folder of my choice and then people just enter my PC's IP address INSERT INTO post VALUES (which is masked with a ftp.net adddress) in the address bar.

I just have no idea how to set the LFS thing up.. the instructions are ****e!

BraindG
26-08-2003, 04:57 PM
erm, im pretty sure its the 40MB one i used.. ive got both, but i was playing with the 40MB INSERT INTO post VALUES (now 71MB for some reason)one and it showed the skin on the car, well atleast to me anyway...

talking about skins

BraindG
26-08-2003, 04:58 PM

the badges still need to move down a little bit..

BraindG
26-08-2003, 04:59 PM
its a shame were stuck with that car shape though.. if there was one closer to the shape of the vr4, it would look pretty cool i recon..

Brind
26-08-2003, 06:20 PM
There isn't a skin folder in the 40mb version.. where did you put that skin then?

Looks good by the way.

Brind
26-08-2003, 06:23 PM
Can you put the file on site so I can have a play with it? :)

BraindG
26-08-2003, 06:32 PM
went into data\skins im about 70% sure this isnt the big download im using..

BraindG
26-08-2003, 06:35 PM
for sure just checked LFS_S1A_DEMO.zip = 42.171KB

and there is a skins folder..

ive not got the psd file anymore, like a wolly i didnt save it.. could send you the one from skins folder....

Brind
26-08-2003, 06:37 PM
I've just downloaded the 41mb version again and it's different to one I downloaded last time... so you're right there is a skins folder in that version.

I'm trying to add the data for the turbo car I got in the older download version but it won't work. :INSERT INTO post VALUES (

BraindG
26-08-2003, 06:46 PM

Kieran
26-08-2003, 09:46 PM
Just tried as well. Can connect, but can't get guest info.

This maybe because of your firewall - We had the same problem. Make sure you've got both TCP and UDP open on the LFS port INSERT INTO post VALUES (653xx range i think...)

Nick VR4
26-08-2003, 09:50 PM
yeah Firewall is getting a bit nervous

tryiing again

BraindG
26-08-2003, 09:58 PM
Found this on site - can you open up that port?

-I want to run a host from behind a router or connection sharing - which port needs to be open?

Live for Speed Demo Test currently uses TCP and UDP port 63392 by default, but when starting a host, you can enter any port. Some people have problems with high port numbers. They should try lower numbers, as some ISP's are blocking high ranges.

Nick VR4
26-08-2003, 10:00 PM
I have let the firewall learn this so it should be ok now

BraindG
26-08-2003, 10:06 PM

cant find any minimum spec for the game im afraid.. checked site, and the docs you get with the download, but it doesn't mention anything about spec required. :INSERT INTO post VALUES (

i do know it needs directX 8.1 and above.. is DirectX up-to-date?
