Year Make Model: 2000 Legnum VR4 manual
Subject:
Type:
Description: I was immeadiately struck by the good looks of the Galant/Legnum models when migrating to New Zealand in 2001. When it was time to get rid of my then set of family wheels (It was rubbish and too embarrassing to mention here) I was looking for something sporty, good looking, big enough for the family (3 kids), able to tow my boat (2000kg)and 4WD for the slippery ramps when launching. Most people I talked to were a bit worried about the towing aspect but I dicided to follow my heart and bought a 1996 trigger mauve tiptronic VR4 Legnum. The car fulfilled all my expectations and despite dire predictions the slushbox withstood the towing for 3 years, twice overheating on mountain passes on my trips up to Doubtless Bay . I fitted a gearbox cooler eventually which kept the gearbox cool but the engine tended to get very hot on long hills due to the restricted airflow through to main radiator.
When it was time to replace the car I could not think of anything better to replace it with at the price they were going for and eventually found a very nice 2000 Facelift manual.
The car is going very well and I regularly get 400km from 52-53 liters of BP's best in city driving (as opposed to the 320 -350 km's with the previous tiptronic one) and the manual in my opinion is so much nicer to use in general driving and even more so when towing.
Next on my list is upgrading the ICE and possibly fuel management.
