ECU is behind/below the radio. Remove the kick panel on the passenger side of the centre console, and the small access flap beside the pedals. The part number should be on the side of the casing (it's the lower of the 2 ECUs) - the one with the 3 plugs on the front, not the 4 plugs (that's the engine ECU).

The dipstick has Cold and Hot markings. Basically, once it's up to operating temperature, park on flat, level ground, and make sure you cycle it through P-R-N-D-N-R-N-D etc a few times, then flick it over to tiptronic mode, and move between 1st and 2nd a few times. Then go back to Reverse and back into Drive etc. Finally, leave it in Neutral, and check the dipstick.

You should be filling it to the marks on the dipstick anyway! Did you do the proper procedure to check the hot level too?

To be fair, it was left in a pretty tidy condition! Only a few dirty rags left on the bench/floor! Though I've not confirmed that tools haven't been moved around between drawers etc! ;)

This is amazing BCX GregorEST - foxdie maybe we can actually recover those ECUs we thought were dead!

Here is a list of the auto gearbox & ECUs, and the dates of change - hopefully you can source a correct matching pair!

Firstly, it is CRITICALLY important that the gearbox and ECU are matched. There were about 9 different variations on transmission ECU, and 3 major revisions of the gearbox... A mismatch here doesn't help anything else! As for your fault codes... Engine 72 / TCL 77: almost definitely the grey vacuum canister on the firewall is cracked, so isn't holding vacuum as expected ABS/ASC 24 - almost definitely a broken ABS reluctor ring on the Rear Left. Gearbox 43: potentially this...

There aren't any current Link boards that are plug & play direct from Link. It's possible that Steve has either 1) modified the Evo 4-8 bottom board, or 2) made a new base board, or 3) does wiring changes...? :)

If you do decide to get a Haltech, you'll be starting from scratch, but if you go with a Link, then we've got lots of experience, and can help you massively get up and running! As foxdie says, keep an eye out because we're hoping that relatively soon, there'll be something available that'll make your life VERY easy to switch to an aftermarket ECU!

Does the ECU still run the car at this point? Or is it totally dead? Both myself and foxdie have had ECU failures during flashing, which have rendered the ECU totally unusable - we don't know exactly what is causing it, but we *think* it's trying to reflash when the ECU is warm - for example if you've been driving the car hard, it's been sitting for a while with a hot exhaust, a long tuning session on the dyno etc, as the ECU is tucked up under the dash, on top of the transmission tunnel &...

I've been busy integrating a lot of my dad's old tools and equipment into my home garage, so no progress on the Anglia this time. So, instead, I thought I'd give you a guided tour of the newly rearranged and tidied garage - as you'll probably never see it this clean and organised again!

Hi Adam! I must say I am biased - but I would certainly recommend one! In my opinion, the automatic gearbox and AYC are the two defining features that make this car unique amongst its peers. And thankfully, that's the most common combination!! I would buy based upon condition, rather than spec at this age. Rust is the biggest killer, and you'll soon see how much work I'll be doing to sort out what looks, on the surface, a relatively clean and straight car... And of course, you've got...

I would like to thank everyone who came to this for making it an AMAZING weekend. I has so much fun talking with everyone, seeing new faces and old ones, it's exactly what I needed after 18 months of being cooped up not seeing anyone! It was probably the biggest collection of Galants & Legnums in one place for a number of years! I'm aware that some people didn't quite get everything done to their car that they had hoped - being the most popular one of these ever there was so much going...

Whilst upgrading the regulator is advisable with a Walbro, it's not strictly necessary. Have you tried unplugging the MAF and seeing if the problem gets better? Maybe it's an airflow issue, rather than a fuelling issue...

Hi and welcome! Unfortunately for you, the prices seem to be going up at the moment - even dodgy ones are fetching reasonable money! That said, even a fresh import off the boat from Japan is still around £7-8k, and what you get for that price, is astonishing! One of the best cars made, in my humble opinion! (So much so, that I'm currently driving a 2010 Audi S4 Avant, and I'll be chopping that in as soon as I get my Legnum back on the road!) I wish you luck in your search for a VR-4! ...

I'm going to be buying some ARP head bolts to go into my engine. See here for what and why! https://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?70761-Stronger-main-and-headbolts They come in boxes of 10, and we need 16 per engine. So, buying 5 sets, we get 3 engines (plus 2 spare). Buying 8 sets, we get 5 engines.

Come on people! This is a great opportunity to get a health-check on your car based on the power run, to log not only the torque output across the rev range, but also your boost pressure, and Air/Fuel ratio with a calibrated sensor up the exhaust - this can give you a great idea whether any aspects need tweaking to gain more power. Or, just go straight for the tuning session, and grab some nice driveability improvements!

Did you test all the fuse(s) in the engine bay, too? I know none of them are labelled for Horn, but worth checking! Do you feel the relay clicking when you press the horn switch? Take the column cover off, and try checking the other side of the clock spring - it could then be that it's the clock spring at fault.

PMs have been sent to those who have put their name in the Google Document. jahooli - you've not put anything on the document - if you're just popping along to Area 52 that's fine, but if you'd like to come to the house, please add your name to the list on the linked Google doc :)
