Thanks Nick, so if the tensioner has not failed and it is just a case of it being badly adjusted how do I correct it?

Thanks Andy, I really appreciate the reply. It makes sense as the belts were only done about 5000 miles ago. Just trying to find someone to come and sort it now as I am too worried to drive it, and not feeling confident enough to check the timing and reset the tensioner myself. I don't suppose you fancy the job, I'm happy to pay, or know someone who can help. Thanks Steve

I read through the "timing belt how to guide" a couple of other people asked about their slack belts but got no answers.

Hi Guys, there been a strange noise coming from what I think is the timing belt idler (the small pulley at the top between the banks. I took the front cover of today to have a look the noise seemed to be in time with some white markings on the belt and went away when I sprayed a little wd on. However after i stopped the engine I noticed that the belt was slack on this pulley and it was able to move freely, despite the belt being seemingly tight on the cam pulleys. Worried I sent a text...

It's about 10 min job, lift rear off side corner undo couple 12mm bolts holding pump up, lean pump down, unscrew old screw back new switch, you loose a bit of fluid depending how quickly you screw new in, you may need to make new cable connections. Bolt everything back in and check if ayc light stays on if it stays on turn little screw on switch about 1 turn at the time until ayc light stop showing up.

I like amsoil as it was recommended to me about 10 years ago and I use only this since, engine oil keeps engine internals exceptionally clean also seen abuse (well did couple track laps with it) and it serve well, also gearbox oil been used here since I remember and do well, even 'cure' couple boxes where owners **** themselves thinking box is scrap and it was much better 'fixed' by simply switch to amsoil. Regarding this MPM oils, I would happily put it in my box as its meet 'Mitsubishi...

Thats the thread that got me confused, it recommends dexron 3 for AYC. But I've read other threads that say its not suitable. Its all a bit confusing. Is there a definitive list of which spec fluids are to be used where, because there are so many required on the drive train and I keep reading conflicting information and people seem to call things by different names even Mitsubishi manual is confusing on the spec of the fluid and where it goes. I'm pretty keen to get fluids changed this...

Just to clarify because im getting a bit mixed up. It is the AYC clutch pack fluid I should change and only an sp-III spec ATF should be used for that? Or am I getting mixed up? because i just opened an AYC service guide that recommended dextron 3. Cheers Steve

Cheers, I really appreciate the help and advice guys. I did have a quick look for the reservoir in the boot while I was doing a show and tell with my mates, but didn't find it. I will have another proper look tomorrow and hopefully do the AYC oil change. The pump oil change looks quite involved.

Collected the car today. the AYC warning light, which didn't come on when I originally test drove it, is now on all the time. Previous owner who I managed to contact (seller was dealer who took it in part ex) said it used to come on occasionally and probably needs AYC oil change. Hopefully its not a major issue.

Hi. I am about to pick up a super vr4 this weekend. But the steering wheel is a standard one. Are you still recovering with the red trim?
