To keep anyone interested up to date. Updates! Just came back from the garage and pulled out all the clutch packs that are accessible from the side. Issue seems to be much clearer now. At the back of the clutch pack where the wave ring sits I found some minor damage like something had been chafing quite tightly on the stuff at the back and the steel ring on the clutch pack had quite a bit of the metal dust on them when rest of the trans seemed to be clean. So my current hypothesis is...

That is correct, but the TCU was never changed when the B transmission was put in. So for some reason the B was also working with the current TCU. TCU model number matches the one in the database for A unit.

Hopefully this works. Didn't find the actual link to this one while at work, but this should be the pdf I found. Well not exactly as hoped, but you can copy the link and download it still.

Thanks for all the links! That also led me to find a troubleshooting manual for it seems like this transmission and that directed me towards the overdrive or underdrive clutch stack. Soo, went and put the car up and pulled the clutch side panel off. Oil prop was covered in metal shavings and oil and it seems like there some amount of it on the bottom of the case too. The planetary gear set didnít seems like it was the culprit from first glance. Clearly there is some mechanical problem...

Thanks! Need to look into it tomortow and maybe I can say straight away if itís in the wrong order or something.

Now that I think about it, it would make sense if the clutch stack is in there wrong. R, P and first to second seem to be working and past that it seems like itís not getting any traction so it could be that the stack for 3-5 is in wrong order. Got to try and find a correct stack order and check it seems. Iíll first wait for the sensors and if they donít do anything pull the side of the trans open.

The car came with a W5A51-3-E6B transmission installed that was broken but had been in use for some time before breaking. It was rebuilt by someone before it was installed some thousands of kilometers ago. W5A51-3-E6A Transmission came with the car in pieces and had been working before it was removed(or so the seller said). Both were in pieces when I assembled the W5A51-3-E6A transmission, but at different tables. I put it together according to the workshop manual and swapped the clutch...

ECU: MD975141 Transmission: W5A51-3-E6A Car is pre-facelift 1996 with ayc, tcl and the Japan winter spec stuff it seems. Both parts should be the originals from the car. I did out together the transmission while the broken one was also on the table and I used all clutch plates from that one(brand new and seemed to the same as the old box) but otherwise all internals should ve from the original box. Could maybe some specific internal part cause this if it was accidentally from the newer box...

Yes, both sensors should be on correct spots. Checked from both transmission I have and from amayama teardown pictures. Just for fool proofing, the one that points upwards should be closer to the front of the car right? Got both sensors ordered also so will be changing them next week hopefully. So to recant what has been solved and what is left; Solved: -Boost pressure missing

That's a bit concerning then. Still going to order some more oil, but if that's true then it should not be the problem and am a bit out of ideas then. Next step I quess would be to order some sensors and try if those are fried.

So, updates. Was home so late last night that did not bother to log in. First the good news; Found boost pressure! Got to 1bar according to the turbo timer thingie. There was one pipe that had the under side of the lip twisted and fitting that correctly seemed to fix that. Then the "neutral" -Sensors seemed to be in good order. Gave them a clean and checked all cables -Vacuum chamber seemed to be in good order and tubes were tight. Some wear, but nothing that should leak. -Swifter...

First update; ECU is MD761988, so that should be a match as far as I think. Will post update when I get a little bit more sorted out.

Wow! I do so much love this community! Would not have expected so many answers and so good ones! Thanks a lot for this one! Will check it in a few hours. If that is the problem will just have to find some Amsoil from Finland quickly :D I did have to change one of the sensors from the other box as the case was broken. I think I'll check both and part numbers for them.

Would you happen to have a link to the procedure? I went with the amounts from the oils and liquids post since that all I came across scouring here. Could very well be then that the oil level is not close enough. I did check it cold and hot that it's in the markings, but did not do it in any specific way.

Yup, went with Amsoil so should be good on that! Though I do think I have a bigger oil cooler so not sure how much more oil I would need due to that. Any idea if a 100-200ml difference could cause something like this?

Thanks! I actually just got a message back from the seller saying that the ECU was never touched(going to double check still tomorrow), so I'm expecting there to be a MD975141 ECU with the current W5A51-3-E6A transmission that should match. According to him the combo was also working with the W5A51-3-E6B transmission, but I quess that was a lucky accident. Any other ideas what the transmission problem could be except for the mismatching ECU? I'm thinking of checking the sensors, that...

Thanks a lot! Tomorrow I'm going to be taking the turbo piping off that I had to take off earlier for the transmission job, so going to check those thoroughly. As for the transmission ECU, I'm thinking it should be the original the car has had, as the seller gave all the old stuff to me on sale and it did not include any ECU except the on in the car. Will check the model tomorrow also and ping the seller if he has any parts left accidentally.

So, this will be a bit of a long post, so TL;DR first Bought a Legnum with broken transmission. Had a spare on hand and did the job. Now the car is driving, but seems to have no boost pressure and error codes 43, 72, 24 and 77. Any ideas? Now for the whole and long stuff. So, the car is a 1996 Pre-facelift VR-4 that seems to be a winter spec. The guy I bought from seemed to have some knowledge on cars, but didn't seem to be most familiar with all the stuff Legnums have going on them....

Thanks! Been lurking here for a few years on and off, but now I actually have something to use the resources on. Actually got the paid membership before making the deal on the car even. Was hoping to make some documentation on the progress to possibly do some writeup, but got too excited doing the project and didn't take enough pictures.

Greetings from Finland. Just recently got a project Legnum VR4 1996 that has transmission problems. Still need to assemble the new transmission and after that can get to assessing the car properly. The car it self has been almost a daily driver for quite a while to previous owners, but has been sitting with the broken transmission for a bit over six months. Also at least two previous owners did not do the best work on keeping it in shape, so some rust here and there, some pain chipping...
