Was it ever sold in the UK, what are the specs?

Its hard trying to find performance data on them. Best I have found is that a stock one does 0-60 Mph in somewhere between 6 and 7 secs. Pretty good fot a vehicle that weighs just under 2000kgs.

Lots of room in that engine bay. Could use a GTO engine with bigger turbos maybe?

Might be cheaper to start from a "plain" shogun then, as you could get a 3.0 6G72 in it anyway.

I hadn't realised that despite the external facelift they hadn't changed the interior of the shogun, and it's the same as my parent's 1991 example, but with the climate control panel in place of the heater knobs.

I would imagine that the chasis, suspension and brakes etc are toughened up compared to the normal car in the same way that a vr4 is. Apparently they handle quite well, normal ones certainly do not.

Got home this evening and this one was parked outside my house

there's one in that shade of silver and one in pearl white round peterborough , its the only 4x4 i would choose over a RR sport

Look around for a Pajero Evolution. That's what they are in the JDM market.
