my mate just got a new car and said that it has 130 bhp and 300 talk.
can someone please tell me what the hell talk is and what talk does my 2.5l v6 galant have?
thanks

do a search for torque on google and you'll get lots of results, it is measured in either ftlbs or nm's normally. Imagine you push a wrench with 20 newtons of force (2kg's) at 0.5 metres away from the centre of rotation, you'll have 10nm of torque.
ok great so how much torque does my galant have?
if your anything like me , then not enough is always the answerOriginally Posted by KEENY
thats very true cos you can never have to much but you can always have to little.
but that still dont answer the quetion lol
Might want to have a read at this page, which seems to do a reasonable job balancing technical details with a friendly read.
Your Galant 2.5 V6, from Carfolio, has 223 Nm of torque by comparison with your pal, who I'm guessing has a turbodiesel. 130hp & 300 (Nm? = 220 lb/ft) of torque sounds roughly in line with the VW / Audi / Skoda 1.9TDi.

I don't think your mate's car can have 300 of any kind of torque with only 130bhp (unless it's a diesel)

yeah its a 1.9 tdi. so would i be right in saying his motor will have a better take off but once mine catchs up its all over?
or am i dreaming? its just he's a real smug git the kinda bloke you really want to lump, lol
You need power and torque, but you need a rev range where both are available. Diesels don't have that yet. You should beat him in a straight line, but your car will be much easier to drive quickly than his TDi plus it will be FAR smoother.
nick you just made my day son, he is here with me and he is crying. he said he only brought the car to take my galant to the cleaners.
guess he should get a vr4, lol
Which TDi is it? We know 1.9, but what car?
A friend of mine has a Golf GT Tdi 130, When he bought it from VW they told him they could 'chip' it to 190bhp. He didn't have it done as it would obviously be extremely ropey, but he is considering getting it pumped up to around 160. This might be an option for your buddy Keeny. Will cost anywhere between £300 - £550.Originally Posted by KEENY

The best things in life have to be lubricated
its a Renault Laguna. i was told that the galants are easy to chip aswell. does chipping shorten the life of the car or impare the car in anyway?
and if it can be chipped how much will the bhp improve by?
Chipping a turbo diesel usually gives around 30bhp. Chipping an N/A petrol usually gives at most 10bhp.
A Laguna 1.9 dCi 130? - manufacturers figures were 120 AFAIWA and the 2.2 dCi had 150 horses. I may however be out of date with my info.
Chipping will not shorten the life as long as it's done under safe tolerances. Use a tried and tested brand / garage / product and you'll be fine.
Looks like your mates laguna is listed as 10s to 60. The V6 Galant is listed as 7.9 for a manual, 9.3 for an auto. So even if you are losing power with an auto you should still have the edge!
The club has recently held a Dyno day at Silverstone the results can be found on this threadOriginally Posted by KEENY
My V6 is pushing out 194.7 at the fly this = 165 at the wheels and 128 (aprox) power to weight ratio
It depends how you interoperate power and torque figures – the following parts affect the performance you may be looking for:
Manual or auto – Manual losses less power
4WD or RWD or FWD – depends on where the engine is located, generally 4WD losses a lot of power, RWD with a front mounted engine losses less but more than a FWD with an engine mounted in the front (not the best combination) all of us know the best would be RWD with a rear or mid engine + a lot more fun (super cars).
Engine type: Petrol or Diesel – diesels will give you more torque in the lower rev range but petrol engines are normally more steady / revy and powerful in the higher range
Do you want to pull speed or caravans? eeeerrr cant answer that I use my V6 to pull a trailer tent and I don’t know its there.
Weight – obviously a Kawasaki 179BHP bike will kick the ass of many supercars on the straight (yes even 280PHP VR4s) but the car has 4 wheels and possibly 4WD round the bends.
Suspension – how is yours set up, hard and uncomfortable but good round the bends or soft and comfortable but crap in a corner.
Driver – put the stig in my car against me in a Ferrari and I think the stig would still win.
How would you like to gauge the power?
At the fly – all manufactures use this at the bench mark because it is the highest figure – note this is the power produced by the engine not the performance of the car.
At the wheel – more accurate in terms of the cars performance because it takes into account the transmission.
Power to weight ratio – more accurate in terms of acceleration i.e. 0 – 60 / 0 – 100 etc
Taking into account the above:
Transition
Engine type
Weight
Suspension
Driver
My only conclusion is have a race with your mate (on a proper race track) and I think you will be surprised by the power of a V6 petrol engine over a diesel – I was and I an still enjoying the kills.

power comes from revs and is only a mathematical eqaution (sp?) = Horsepower = Torque x rpm / 5252. which in english means more revs more powerOriginally Posted by Nick Mann
