    Coil pack

My old Sports GT, which had been very stuttery of late, has been diagnosed with a dodgy coil pack. Now, I have the rare-as-hens-teeth 6A12TT engine. Can anyone confirm that any 6A1-series engine's coil pack will fit, e.g. from a regular two litre V6 like the FTO, or the larger 2.5 V6 you 8G guys have?

It'd make sourcing the parts a heck of a lot easier if I can plunder another car's...

    Thanks in advance,
    G

The fto and VR4 are different. I tried an FTO one and it will fit a VR4 with spacers but I'm not sure if it will work the other way around. I expect it will be too short but you may be able to use the plug extension from your one on the vr4 coil if it is in good condition

Cheers for the responses, and apologies for the late reply.

@Peter: Do you mean the FTO is different from an 8G VR-4 2.5L, or just different to any 6A1 turbo?

@Both: If I took a decent pic of the coil pack in mine, how good would you be at identifying whether it's the same as an FTO and/or VR-4? That'd save people sending stuff through the post in the first instance.

The 2 are different .The top of the coil is in a different plane on the fto compared to the VR4. The electrial connector is round the opposite way. I will look and see if I still have a pic of the FTO one and I can put up a pic of the VR4 one later unless somebody else beats me to it. They are also a different length . I cant remember if shorter or longer
    FTO coil . I'll add a VR4 one later

VR4 coil. They are shorter and the upper part of the coil is turned round the other way

Feck, that's a lot better than I managed. Parts sitting on a table? I got two under-bonnet photos that don't really help at all...

Here's the whole engine bay showing the coil packs on the left hand side of the engine:

And here's a close-up, although I'm not sure this is much use. I wanted to get a more side-on view, but all the pipework was getting in the way a bit:

I guess the best bet might be to take one of them off and get a look at the "stem". Eeek.

They are different from the FTO and VR4 ones. Neither will be any use to you I think. The VR4/FTO ones sit on top of the front bank sparkplugs with a lead from each going to the rear bank plugs.

The 6A12TT uses completely different coils to the 6A13TT, they are basically regular twin prong coilpacks. Though I think the mitsubishi ones are negatively charges as opposed to most other cars being positively charged... or some such nonsense I was really listening at the time I was being told about it.

Anyways, bosch makes a replacement coilpack for it which I think is BIC608, how ever check the coilpack on yours, if it is a MD181477 then this will be a direct replacement.

Otherwise you'll have to contact mitsubishi for one.

Ahhh, well thanks for that ~ that's helpful (if not necessarily good news).

I'll keep my fingers crossed, and let folks know how things turn out.

Let us know what the prices are you're quoted, might be able to find something cheaper here and send it to you for much less...

Belated response. I took another pic of the engine bay:

The coil pack in the top left quarter of the pic is the one nearest the front of the engine bay. I don't know exactly what I'm photographing here (a mounting plate for the coil packs?) but it has "608" on it, as did the Bosch part number you mentioned. You reckon that's just a co-incidence?

This is a F608 coil here but it may not have the same connections but you may be able to adapt them to fit

I'd have a look at a coil pack from a 6g72, although those do look a bit smaller.

    Cheers,

    Ben.

    Cheers,

    Ben.

Do you think they may do the job Ben with a bit of tweaking. I searched for an alternative for the VR4 but couldn't find anything the same length. With the coils not sitting on one of the plugs it must make finding an alternative a bit easier.
