    Speedo Not Working Help Again!!

Update on my speedo, I just got back from Melbourne today from taking my car to Howard Instruments and they found the problem finally , i was happy for a moment when i thought they fixed it but was told that it is a auto specialists job . The fault is the drive worm in the extention housing. So i rang my local transmission guy and he said it would be at least $800 dollar job to fix and more than likely a whole lot more. So would anyone know a part numbers or what parts i need or have a diagram of the auto box so when i get it done it will be easier for the auto guy thanks jase.

That's odd. The speedo sensor is a replaceable part - Shouldn't cost 800. The way it's set up is that the cog on the end of the speedo sensor is plastic - And yes, whilst I've not heard of a VR4 doing it, they can strip their teeth. I'd be doubtful that it's the cog that meshes onto the sensor cog though.

It's probably one of these two sensors that's playing up:

It might be worth meeting up with one of your local OzVR4 peeps - See if you can do a quick sensor swap just to confirm?

That is def the speedo sensor, usually the plastic cog on the sensor (the white cog in the photo) wll go before the cog it meshes into gives out. It is designed so that it goes first!, never heard of the cog wheel in the gear box going first?.
Can you see inside the hole that the speedo drive sensor goes into to see if there is def damage?. It's a strange one?, but you seem to be doing all the right things.
As far as I know the one with the cog is for the speedo on your dash, the other two sensors (link above by K) are more for sending info to the Auto box ecu, which then controls the gearchanges, there are three of them, and if anything goes wrong with any one of them your atuo box goes into safe mode, It stays in 3rd gear and the neutral light on the dash flashes.
I had probs with mine, but it was the connector wiring connection that goes onto that sensor that was damaged?, worth a check before you have to srip the box, good luck.
I wonder if an auto electrician could tap into one of the other sensors for a signal, but the may be reading the speed of something else in the box?

When i talked to the auto specialist and said it was the drive worm in the extention housing he started talking about ripping the box out so i gather it is the gear inside he did say he would look at all other possibility's first, i brought a new speed sensor so it is diffidently not that and all wiring is fine so it all points to the drive worm in the extention housing so ive been told by the Instrument guys. I might have another look to see if i can see inside for any damage. One of the guys on OZVR4 gave me this part # MD747098 its for "GEAR,SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN" on ASA is that what im after !! thanks Jase

just out of interest, with the speedo sensor pluged in but not in the box, if you manually spin it do you get a speedo reading.
