    Automatic Gearbox Rebuild info

    For everyones information:

Rebuild parts for our W5A51 can be obtained via Cobra transmissions or WIT in the states. Prices are from US$130-$330 depending on whether you need a full kit or not. Shipping is about US$70.

If you are in a rush you can obtain the parts from your local Mitsubishi dealer, but the cost will be ridiculous.

Those two place in the states can also supply solenoids for US$43 each. Our autos need 6 of them. Please don't order 5 like I did!!

I personally used cobra, they were very good with their customer service.

The other recommendation is while your auto is being fixed, get a shift kit fitted. MV automatics here in Australia developed a kit directly for Mitsubishi ralliart. You send in your old valve bodies and they modify them and then post them back. Cost is AU$385. Allows quicker shifts and takes pressure off the clutch packs and will extend the life of the auto. +61-8-8370 0430 is their number.

Will post up the results in a month when it's all done.

That's what this forum stuff is all about, if everyone all puts in a little research effort and shares it, it helps out the next person.

Should be all good soon. Just hope the power doesn't destroy it all again.

    Great info!
A question though. On both the places they say "W5A51 from 2001 and up" is it just that the W5A51 was not used in the US before 2001 or are these parts only for Galant/Legnum VR4 after 2001?

Any news about how the rebuild went?

Nice one, Madhav, added to rep +1
I'll definitely be in contact with them when my transmission dies.

How long did it take for shipping?

what do you get in the rebuild kit as it does not seem to say, unless it is everything under the title which includes a torque converter, which i find hard to believe.

    can someone enlighten me

The kit is for both facelift and pre facelift. Mine is a 96 it's all good.

The shipping took like 10 days I think. The master kit contained all seals, springs, clutch packs, metal etc needed for your typical rebuild. Didn't include a T/C though, got mine rebuilt and strengthened locally.

I spoke to my mechanic today, he was putting it all back together but said that the custom built titanium billet shaft was constructed incorrectly and didn't fit, so now he is estimating Wednesday next week for it to be finished.

Other than this rebuild is done.

T/C as in "torque converter" right?
Is this the master kit you ordered from Cobra? : 142006A

Was the billet shaft a part of the kit or is this something you ordered on the side?

And as Davesj said the broken down costs is very interesting to know

Once it is done I will be able to tell you what it all cost.

Here is a description of what you get in the different kits. Email them and see if they have any stock for the W5A51.

From memory there was the cost of the rebuild kit and the 6 new solenoids from cobra, then the T/C (torque converter) rebuild, custom billet shaft, valve bodies and wave spring upgrade, various oils and of course labour on top of all this. I would be surprised if I get change from 1500 pounds.

It could have been done a lot cheaper, but considering I'm looking at running at least 370 hp at the wheels I figured it's important to spend a little more and strengthen it up a little.

The kit didn't come with a billet shaft.

Here is a current link to the website for the master kit that includes the steels as well (Steels are metal rings for the clutch packs)

    https://cobratransmission.com/master...7-up-1003011-1

here is a rebild manual for the F5A51 {front wheel drive unit) that i found in my bucket of manuals not sure if i had post it up before, i probably have. it is not a mitsi manual it is a third party company service and rebuild manual so there might be some additional info in it to explain what is going on.

I think the F5A51 will be very very similar to the W5A51 that we use as the AWD part of the auto box is just the mechanical intoface to the transfer case.
