I recently bought this Evo 7-9 clutch and lightened flywheel kit for 470 quid (bargain!) and had it fitted to my car by Nick Mann with his flywheel adapter plate and I have to say it's really good.

Actuating the clutch pedal is actually EASIER than a stock manual VR-4 clutch, and the clutch is much grippier once you let it out, great for TLGPs

It helps with performance by just a small fraction, but the downside of the lightened flywheel is you have to rev the engine up just a little bit more to pull away at a junction or it'll (nearly) stall.

Sorry, Matt. I have replied to your PM now. I have got one on the shelf at the moment and can get more within a couple of days.

Thanks for the feedback, Jason. Could you update us in a few months too, as there is not much feedback on non-exedy products yet!

We didn't weigh it before installation, it's not a fat lot lighter according to Nick but it's noticeable.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why my clutch pedal must require at least 30kg of force to depress it?

I got one like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MITSUBISHI-EVO...#ht_2097wt_905
but it was list EVO 7 8 9
    exedyClutch.jpg

This is listed for £800 where as the one you got is listed for £470.25.

So I guess what I'd like to know is what governs the amount of force needed (i previously assumed the springs in the clutch) and can it be changed?

    thx

I have the same Exedy clutch as you Eoin. I love it. It sometimes gets annoying when holding the bite at traffic, but I find it bites so well that I can actually move off from almost any incline with just the clutch! Cost me £600 about 15 months ago.

Nick's adaptor plate is still doing me proud. No issues so far so must mean its working well

I too would like to reiterate my thanks to Nick for the adapter. Upon install it was pretty much only thing that DIDN'T BRAKE :-)

I figured *someone* would know why my clutch takes so much force to push and others not so much.
    Surely.... pls?
If there's something I can do I'd like to do it before something else breaks.
    thx

The basic reason will be the pressure plate springs. The higher the clamping force, the more leg power required to overcome it. I guess it will also depend on the actual design if the plate too. Other things are relatively logical too: fluid condition; pipework condition; grease on splines and release bearing etc. There is also a damper on top of the gearbox which if I understand correctly acts as a pinch point to stop the clutch pressure changing too rapidly. Maybe removing that will help? Some of the evo boys remove it.....

The damper was one of the things that broke after a few months. It was removed out of necessity. Cracked right down the middle (twice). I felt no difference to the clutch whatsoever upon removal.
When I got the clutch changed I used all the fluids recommended here by experience.
I guess the pressure plate springs are my problem. I presume they're that strong for a reason. Considering the clutch is for an evo 9 perhaps its hydraulic ratio is different....?

30 kg of force sounds like a lot of pedal force required - not sure what mine is, I'll try to measure it with a scales for comparison (OS Giken with spec 10,700 Nm (1,100 kgf / m) clamping force). If memory serves, it reuses the same pistons (but reverses the action via push/pull linkage) so the hydraulic ratio should be the same as stock. Feels firm but not overly so.

Checked my clutch pedal force using a luggage scales for OSGiken:

To depress fully 20kg max (peak at roughly 2/3rds of pedal travel)
    To hold depressed 10kg max
To release fully 13kg max (again peak at roughly 2/3rds of pedal travel)

Seems weird that the figures vary but I measured it a few times to be sure.

    (Sorry for thread hijack!)

Flywheel adapter fitted with stock evo 7-9 machined flywheel and an Exedy MBK-7420HD

Quite a stiff pedal but working well. Bites like nothing else.

    Hi Nick,

Have you got a set of the bolts available I could grab from you?
