nope fade is when you lose braking power i still had the braking force available to me at a slightly firmer pedal pressure.Originally Posted by aboo

If you look at some rally cars on twisty tarmac stages they will be on fire, perfectly normal. I had my Audi Coupe's brakes spitting flames years ago.
The Brembos were glowing past cherry red, much lighter [not quite white, though.]
As I stood in a phone-box, looking at my car, it literally spat flames about 2 feet across the pavement.
I'd only been driving around town, although I was 18 and desperately seeking Susan at the time !
yeah any time steelie would be a pleasure
Right - I've fitted some of these on my poor, abused front discs and it's an okay pad.
To be honest, I'm actually impressed: they're very quiet pads, and have held up to some mild abuse without croaking. They're definitely not OEM spec, as they're much dustier, and seem to actually work if you brake from 100mph twice in a row, so I would consider them a "mild upgrade".
As for flames from your brakes from driving around - it strikes me as far more likely that you had a leaky caliper seal and managed to heat them up enough to ignite the brake fluid.
I wanna get my brakes on fire!
i managed it on the missus golfOriginally Posted by Atik
i fitted new pads on hers and bedded them in as per the instructions, came home and parked the car up, laughed a bit at the smoke and then noticed the wisps of flame so i let it sit for 10 mins to cool and then checked the temp of the bake discs 256 degrees c on one and 259 on the other
to put that in context after bedding in the brembos on the leggie the highest temp straight after the run was 128, just shows the difference that bigger and vented discs make.
its easy if you try hard enough!!
Given that I've driven 40miles with a stuck caliper on an impreza, using a whole tank of fuel and large boost most of the way, with smoke pouring off it, and the caliper itself glowing when I stopped, and even then it didn't catch fire, I'd suggest you boys are either setting fire to something else, or are buying the wrong brake pads.
Mine had liquid resin dripping and hissing out onto the wheel at this point!
I've also tried to use an old brake pad backing plate as a bodge in something else, and so cut through it with oxy. The friction material on it comepletely failed to catch alight, even though the steel plate was melting.
They were originally manufactured out of asbestos resin and metallic compound precisely because it was flame retardant.
They've had to drop the asbestos resin, but I refuse to believe they've changed it for something flammable.
Have you considered avoiding the purchase of "Japanese Rye grass formula" pads, and opt for something branded (e.g. Mintex?) instead?
