Had a go at detailing the car today

After seeing gibs treads about him cleaning his car. I thought I'd give it a go myself.

I got myself some detailing clay last week & as it was a not bad day today decided to go for it.

This how she looked before I started.

So I washed her, dried her then clayed her. Washed her, dried her then polished her.
    And 5 hours later.

Clay was good. Was amazed at how much dirt is still on the car after you was it.

The clay looked like the picture on every panal.

I used the polish you recommended as well.

Your a cheeky bugger as well.

The car was looking good today. We had a bit of rain today & it was beading nicely & it was so shiny.

I used Meguiars quick clay. You get the spray & the white clay with it but I bought the green clay as well at a cost of just under £28.

I polished it with Autoglym super resin polish as recommended by gib.

The bars of clay are 50g & I was shocked how small they were but gib told me to cut it in to 3 bits & they do squash out to a good size.

I'm well chuffed with the results but this winter has took its toll on the paint work.

Quit a few stone chips on the bonnet with all the grit on the roads & found a bit of the dreaded rust on the back passenger wheel arch.

So hoping to get some of this sorted later in the year or maybe thinking of a full respray next year.

Cheers for that mate, I might give it a try.

Its not getting the shine that it used to have so might have to do drastic action

As said before could not believe how much dirt was still on the car after washing it.

I'll take the clay & spray with me down to Moffat so you can have a look.

I thing I have got the bug. It was quite relaxing & I enjoyed it. Especially when I saw the results.

You get the stuff & have a trip up to Aberdeen & we could do it together & half the time.

Honestly the pics do it no justice

oh no!!! not another poor guy succumbing to the dreaded detailing affliction
it's the work of the devil and can turn innocent people into addicts

IMHO, aboo & gib786 have been very sensible with the routine they've chosen coz it returns great results and satisfaction in a job well done

but beware, get sucked in by it and it can lead to dire consequences

reading now if you want to actually keep driving your car

those who don't easily get addicted or have a 'no fear' attitude....

i can highly recommend this process:
    http://www.autopia-carcare.com/inf-perfect.html

used in conjunction with a porter cable:
    http://www.autopia-carcare.com/pcdepot.html

    the procedure i followed was:

    1. wash 1 (el cheapo halfords shampoo) & wash 2 (sonus shampoo)
    2. sonus clay
    3. final wash (sonus shampoo)
    4. masking off
    5. sonus sfx 1
    6. sonus sfx 2
    7. classe all-in-one
    8. classe sealant glaze (1-2 coats)
    9. P21S carnauba wax (2-3 coats)

word or warning with the rotary buffers though.
be sure to mask off all panel edges (5mm into the panel suffices)
and plastic bits n pieces you don't want it to polish
and do the panel edges by hand

and should your car have any scratches in that the Sonus SFX 1 can't tackle then you can try G3 and then G10
(as used by most body shops) before any of the above steps
(but be extra careful when using this stuff with a rotary buffer. i'd personally let a bodyshop pro handle the G3/G10 aspect of it)

BUT ... be prepared ... the above is not a 1 DAY job
and seeing the zero swirl mark results 1st hand can turn you into a detailing anal freak
(it did me! and i now vow NEVER to buy a black car again coz it turned mine into a toy rather than daily driver ).
However, step 5/6 and onwards can take even a bodyshop fresh paint job to a totally different level !

(don't want to offend any bodyshop peeps on here, so in the defence of bodyshops....
they CAN do it for you but simply don't have the time necessary given what most people are willing to pay)

maybe i'm just too slow but it takes me a whole day in prep work to properly mask off the car before even starting the polishing process! but....
no more serious polishing required after initial work done and only step 6 and onwards required once or twice a year after that.

want a glimpse of the results of a painful 7 day process??!!

Sensible? Heres a small glimpse at my collection -

Although that was taken quite a while back when I made my first big order, its changed a bit since then

Im currently prepearing myself for a long long session with the G220 as part of the japfest prep. Also got a whole load of other work to do including sorting out the lacquer peel on the brembos and some vinyl wrapping

I agree with the never buying a black car again comment, this is the first and last time I will buy black. Next time I am going to try and go for a nice dark blue. Nice work on the galant btw, looks lovely!

    hiya gib!

Yup, that ridiculous abundance of kit bears a resemblance to my stash.

I retract my 'sensible' comment regarding you.
You're a lost cause like me. You've defo been fully sucked into it also

Do you know if there's counselling to with the detailing affliction coz I wanna kick the habit?!

I dunno how you feel about detailing, but I've come to the conclusion that going to such levels has resulted in the car owning me rather than me owning the car?
and the bloody thing has got too accustomed to being pampered that it's now lazy and only wants to sit there and shine rather than being driven?

Seriously though, my car was supposed to be a daily driver but the OTT detailing has turned it into a toy.
Am sure you can appreciate this, once you see up close results of such work on black cars it's difficult to retract into 'sensible' mode.

Would like to see the results of your endeavours. You gonna post some pix in your gallery?
