Another update guys, I met the owner today at the garage for the MOT and it failed on the following:

Rear fog lamp tell tale not working [1.3.1b]
Offside Rear fog lamp not working [1.3.2b]
    Power steering component(s) leaking [2.3.1b]

The tester left a note for the receptionist saying Rack.

I've left the car with the seller to get the above fixed and pending passing the retest will be buying in the next 10 days. Any thoughts or are these standard things to go wrong? Steering rack sounds expensive if it needs replacing?

He reckons it's around 150 fitted and is willing to knock 150 off the price for me to get it done myself. Sounds cheap to me, any thoughts? Will check the breaking ads on here as well!

    haha oh dear!

Power steering component(s) leaking [2.3.1b] - Do you really think a new steering rack is required?!?

Should I avoid this like the plague?!?

Spoke to the mechanic, he said the fluid was leaking from the rack so it looks like a new rack is in order. I asked how long it would take to repair and he said he wasnt sure but would estimate 2.5 to 3 hours (£69 an hour) so around £200.

Does that sound optomistic? John's previous post advised around 6 hours labour?!?

Dave who is breaking the legnum in the classifieds has a rack for sale for £100 + postage, as I'm an absolute noob is it fair to say this is the only part I'll need to replace to stop the leak? Dave also mentioned he has the power steering high pressure pipes available, do I need these as well?!?

Really want the car but am starting to get concerned it's going to cost £500 - £600 to fix I can't see the seller knocking anywhere near that off the asking price as he will probably just top up the power steering fluid & sell it to some unsuspecting buyer as the MOT has a few months left to run.

If it is going to be that much to get it sorted I might be better off looking for a different one. Nothing is ever straight forward is it!

It's beginning to look this way Maybe this is why the guy is willing to sell it so cheap!

Maybe I'll try and sell a kidney so I can afford the 2001 UK Ralliart one I've seen

Sorry to keep spamming you all but quick update, he reckons a place in Cov can fix it for £150 and is willing to knock £300 off his asking price. Bit of a gamble as if it can't be repaired I'll be £150 out of pocket plus the price of replacing the rack!

Completely unsure what to do next, offered him £450 less than the original price we agreed see what he says!
