    Power steering pump?

    hello!

as i was parking me car earlier, the steering went very heavy, on driving it home it seems fine/little heavier than usual when the engines accelerating, get heavier as i get slower.
iv read thru a few posts and it looks to be the pump.
    few question tho,

is anything else likely to be damaged as a result? especially if its left as is for a while?
what sort of price are the pumps?

and along similar lines, what are the possibilities of complete removal, or retro fitting electric ps from another car?
its something i've been thinking of since buying the car but had not planned on it any time soon.

    thanks in advance

My concern would be the pump seizing completely whilst driving. This could well burn out the belt, which could snap and take out other belts if you're unlucky.

If you REALLY need to drive it, but can't get it fixed/looked at for a few days, I'd be tempted to cut the belt off and drive without PS at all. Just make sure you've already had your Shredded Wheat for parking.

i dont get paid til fri n would then have to wait for delivery of a pump so that might have to be an option. the parking bit is a bit crap but i usually look for spaces i can drive straight into, lol.

not looked yet, its the one the front of the car, yeah? it was mid way thru parking it suddenly went hard, no belt on the floor. then when i got it home and was parking,i nearly punchedd my self in the leg as it suddenly freed up?
how hard is fitting that? would i be right in thinking electric pump means it still pumps liquid?
i know the corsa ones are full electric and require steering column to be changed/drasticaly altered

    cheers

Yeah, an electric pump is powered by the car's electrical system, rather than being mechanically driven by the engine.

    yes

.... but if your asking how to change a power steering belt, your certainly not equipped to start looking at fitting electric power steering.

slack belt or low fluid could cause it. Are the vacuum hoses ok on the valve (located beside front cam belt cover) Also I would not recommend just cutting the belt. Apart from the air con compressor also being disabled the steering will be much heavier than a car not fitted with PAS at all and there would be a risk of potential damage to the steering rack seals. If you've ever hasd the front wheels off the ground and turned the steering from lock to lock with the engine off (same as no belt) the pressure build up will pop the cap off the reservoir showing the sort of reverse pressure it would build. Guess it would be ok if you could always drive in a straight line !
